It’s the hook that horror movie lovers everywhere are familiar with: “What’s your favorite scary movie?”
Most of us hear it in that creepy, modulated voice made famous as the catchphrase from the ‘Scream’ movie franchise, which started in 1996. Almost 30 years later, ‘Scream VI’, the sixth installment of the series, was released in theaters in early 2023 and is now available to stream exclusively on Paramount+.
You’re missing out on a great horror movie if you haven’t had the opportunity to see ‘Scream VI.’ The film carries on the legacy and quality of its five prequels, with its well-written script and talented cast of actors & actresses. Thrilling, twisted, and clever, it might just become your newest ‘favorite scary movie’.
Don’t worry, no spoilers ahead. Let’s focus on the ‘GOATS’ of horror, the ones we know on a first-name basis: Jason. Freddy. Michael. Leatherface. Pennywise. Jigsaw. Ghostface. These are the names of the horror icons who have stalked audiences across the big screen for the past half-century. These movies and names have secured legendary status among the horror genre.
Now, Ghostface is back. The four survivors from the most recent Woodsboro Ghostface killings have relocated to New York City for a fresh start and new beginnings, including college and new friends. Just as they begin to feel a sense of normalcy and routine, they receive that infamous call. More brutal and relentless than ever, stopping at nothing to hunt them down, Ghostface begins another round of stalking and slashing in his quest to butcher his targets.
The terrifying sixth chapter in this legendary horror franchise is brought to life and proudly presented by Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group. Big names like Melissa Barrera (“In the Heights”), Jasmin Savoy Brown (“Yellowjackets”), Jack Champion (“Avatar: The Way of Water”), Henry Czerny (“Mission Impossible”), Mason Gooding (“Booksmart”), Liana Liberato (“The Best of Me”), Dermot Mulroney (“Insidious 3”), Devyn Nekoda (“Ginny & Georgia”), Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”), Tony Revolori (“Spider-Man: No Way Home”), Josh Segarra (“She-Hulk”), Samara Weaving (“Babylon”), with Hayden Panettiere (“Scream 4”) and Courteney Cox (“Scream” series), star in this film, bringing to the screen a plethora of talent from multiple generations.
‘Scream VI’ is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett and written by James Vanderbilt & Guy Busick. It is based on characters created by Kevin Williamson. The film is produced by Project X Entertainment’s William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein, and executive-produced by Kevin Williamson, Chad Villella, Gary Barber, Peter Oillataguerre, Courteney Cox, Ron Lynch, Cathy Konrad, and Marianne Maddalena.
‘Scream VI’ is a thrill-filled ride that lives up to the legacy of its five predecessors and delivers a movie full of the things we’ve come to expect from the ‘Scream’ series. The horror genre is alive and well, with iconic greats like Ghostface still attracting massive fan bases. ‘Scream IV’ is your next movie to watch if you haven’t seen it yet; if you have, it’s well worth a rewatch, too. If the phone rings and someone asks, “What’s YOUR favorite scary movie?” Your answer will come easy.
