In the heart of the early 20th century, when the world was brimming with dreams and ambitions, the grandeur of the RMS Titanic set sail on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. To commemorate the 26th anniversary of its Broadway debut and the 10th anniversary of its London premiere, “Titanic the Musical” is coming to the big screen for the first time. A devoted fan of James Cameron’s “Titanic,” I’m definitely looking forward to seeing this musical. Thanks to Fathom Events and BY Experience, this iconic production will be shown in over 700 movie theaters nationwide on November 4th and 8th, 2023. The story of the RMS Titanic, famously known as ‘the unsinkable ship,’ and its tragic collision with an iceberg is one of the most haunting chapters in our history. The disaster claimed the lives of 1,522 men, women, and children. “Titanic the Musical” draws from this historical catastrophe and the real people who were aboard, turning their stories and personal ambitions into a very cool production!
No, Jack and Rose are not in the play. Although they were beloved characters, they were not actually on the doomed voyage. The musical takes us on a journey through the Titanic’s passengers, each boarding with dreams and aspirations of their own. The Third-Class immigrants seek a better life in America, the Second Class hopes to rub shoulders with the rich and famous, and the millionaire Barons of the First Class anticipate legacies that would endure forever. As they boarded the ship, they were all innocently unaware of the fateful destiny awaiting them.
“Titanic the Musical,” composed by Maury Yeston with a book by Peter Stone, has a rich history of accolades. The duo collectively boasts an Academy Award, an Emmy Award, an Olivier Award, and three Tony Awards. The original Broadway production in 1997 clinched five Tonys, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book. Now, theater enthusiasts and cinephiles alike have the chance to experience this unforgettable musical in a new and captivating format.
Composer and lyricist Maury Yeston mentioned Watching it as a film is a completely different experience than seeing it onstage. The cast is perfect. The camera work and all of the close-ups provide a seamless liquidity for the transitions that makes every moment more immediate. I am amazed by the clarity of the sound and the ability to hear every word. I feel very proud of this reimagined film of Titanic the Musical. It’s a grand story about people’s bravery, cowardice, and a coming together of humanity. It’s also a story about how we deal with an emergency, how we deal with potential tragedy, and how in the final analysis, the human spirit is indomitable under the worst circumstances.
The ensemble cast includes Martin Allanson, Valda Aviks, Graham Bickley, Sam Brown, James Darch, David Delve, Adam Filipe, Emily George, Luke Harley, Emma Harrold, Alastair Hill, Abi Hudson, Barnaby Hughes, Paul Kemble, Niamh Long, Matthew McDonald, Ian McLarnon, Danny Michaels, Janet Mooney, Chris Nevin, Jack North, Joseph Peacock, Billy Roberts, Bree Smith, and Lucie-Mae Sumner.
As this cherished musical makes its cinematic debut, it offers a unique opportunity to relive the grandeur and tragedy of the RMS Titanic. Whether you’re a devoted fan of the stage production or new to the story, don’t miss this two-date event on November 4th and 8th, 2023. For tickets and information go to Fathom Events.
