So two IP’s have released some new editions to some games in the last few weeks. I decided to combine them because this article is going to focus on what is new. I have two articles on them already if you want to see how they play. So let’s start with Star Wars.
It is the time of the Clone Wars: Star Wars deck-building game: Clone Wars edition.
This is a fully playable expansion for Star Wars the deck-building game. The original edition is not required. The gameplay is the same as well, but instead of the Empire vs The Resistance, it’s the Republic vs the Separatist union.
What’s new is more characters ships and bases from that era of the Star Wars universe. Now there is Cad Bane, Queen Amidala, Anakin Skywalker, Jango Fett, and others to use. Some new mechanics that are incorporated are more ways to exile cards, especially for the Separatist union. The Republic is strong in getting more cards out; lots of clones at a lower cost. The ships still defend bases, and you can go bounty hunting to eliminate your opponent’s cards from the Galaxy row. I like having more toys for the sandbox, so for the characters and ships it was worth getting the set.
It can be combined with the original trilogy edition, but I would recommend not using all the cards from both sets at the same time. Overall, a really good expansion. I can’t say which one to get over the other if you only wanted one. I would say get the one with the characters you like most. They both play with the same rules and mechanics and both are great Deck building games.
To boldly go: Star Trek: Star Realms
Star Realms is one of the best deck-building games.
First off, this is the granddaddy of space deck builders, it is a big influence on the Star Wars deck-building game. The 2 ability card system of attack and purchase came from Star Realms. Star Realms is its own IP with the 4 factions instead of 2. In addition, players can use cards from any faction they want in Star Realms. The object is to defeat your opponent by reducing their authority to zero. Players use their cards to attack and purchase more powerful cards to achieve victory. Each of the 4 factions has a focus, so building a strategy of cards that take advantage of those faction bonuses and combinations can determine how well your deck performs. For a challenging 1 versus 1 space-themed deck builder, you won’t go wrong with Star Realms.
White Wizard and UVS games have taken Star Realms and re-skinned it to the new Star Trek Star Realms. It plays exactly the same but instead of the 4 factions like The Blob and Star Empire and such there is the Federation and Klingons. The cards have been re-designed with different icons and it uses tokens to track authority instead of cards.
If you like Star Trek and are looking for a simple yet rewarding deck-building game, then Star Trek Star Realms is a great choice. Current Star Realms players, who want variety may consider this. But don’t look for any new mechanics, as it follows the base Star Realms rules.
So there they are, 2 new deck-building games to tempt your wallet.
Until next time, keep movin’ those meeples!
