Recently I wrote a review for the card game Maximum Apocalypse. If you are not familiar with the game, I suggest you go and read that one first. This review focuses on the additional content found in the Legendary box edition, recently delivered from the Kickstarter, and soon to be in retail.
First off, all of the previous expansions have now been gathered in addition to the new survivors. Now you have the gothic horrors, Dinosaurs, Kaiju, and the new Bugocalypse to survive in while adding the Priest, Ronin, Adventurer, and Army Ranger to your crew.
Speaking of survivors, this version includes plastic miniatures for them, as well as the standard cardboard standee’s. For true solo play, the rules have been revised to include ally cards you may find and can recruit from the monster deck. Each ally will bring an additional skill that can be useful.
There are also life counters for the survivors as well as tokens that can be substituted for the dice, very similar to the ones in the Arkham Horror card game. The game includes trays for the tokens as well as one tray specific for storing the scavenge cards and tiles for a scenario. This makes set up so much simpler and faster.
The box itself includes dividers for storing the cards easily. Besides the specific rules for certain scenarios, there are no changes in the gameplay. Lastly, it includes a prequel book for the Maximum Apocalypse role-playing game coming soon to Kickstarter. The book included goes over character creation and provides a basic overview of the new RPG.
For those who don’t have the expansions, this is a more cost-effective way to add them. In addition, all the enhancements to simplify set up and storage, make it a good consideration for those who already have those expansions. The cost is a hefty $105-$120 for this version, depending on the seller, shipping, and so on. This high price point can be a block for the new players, but if you enjoy the game, it may be a better value in the long run.
I think that if you enjoy this game, it might be a good investment to purchase, as the box contains lots of additional space for new content, an excellent storage system, and miniatures. As a player who loves efficiency and ease of storage, and having no expansions, it was the best way to have all of the current content.
