“Supernatural” returns with its sixth to the last episode, and it was twisty with some interesting tidbits. Last night’s episode, ‘Gimme Shelter’ was directed by Matt Cohen. It was so nice having Cohen back even if it was behind the camera. This week’s chapter was just as wholesome as it was exciting.
The boys take on trying to find Amara, God’s sister because they need to trick her. They have to get her to agree to work with them to trap God when really they have to kill them both. As Sam and Dean set out on their journey to do that, Jack and Cas go investigate a series of murders and disappearances that may or may not be demonic.
Cas and Jack arrive at a spiritual shelter that just happens to be run by ‘Changing Channels’ Dr. Sexy MD (Steve Bacic). The same actor is now playing a new character in tonight’s episode, Pastor Joe. Here they meet his daughter, Sylvia who is seemingly upset about her friend’s death.
Jack and Cas go to see a crossroads demon who is trying too hard to be Crowley. He says there is nothing demonic going on. They realize it is a human doing it but they decided to stay and help. Jack infiltrates the church as a new member. The Pastor puts him on the spot to discuss his spiritual journey, but he couldn’t. Cas stepped in and gave a wonderful speech and even officially called himself a dad twice in this episode. It was very cute. Now at this time, another member has been kidnapped, and to everyone’s surprise, the torture was broadcasted into the church. They have a prime suspect: A former member, but he is dead too.
Sam and Dean stop for gas on their way to Amara, and she actually pops up and surprises them. Apparently, she could smell them. They explain that have a proposition for her and they go chat over a meal. They try convincing her to turn on Chuck but nothing works, they even give up but Dean goes back in once last time. He asks about Mary, why Amara gave that to him Sweetness ensues, and one last time he pushes her on the God subject. She pleas to him, “Can I trust you, Dean?”. He lies right to her face and says yes. So she agrees to help.
Back with Cas and Jack, Sylvia, the daughter is outside talking to another friend and gets upset. She then stabs her and the viewers realize that she is the murderer. It is a little far-fetched, to be honest, but exciting. Jack and her father go after her and Cas eventually take her down. The Pastor finds out that Cas is an angel, and as they are talking, the demon from earlier is seen driving off with the girl pretending to be a cop.
As the episode closes Jack shares, regretfully, that he will die; that Billie is turning him into a bomb to kill God. It is the only way. Cas is full of sadness and goes to break his promise of not telling Sam and Dean while pleading to find another way.
This episode is quite emotional, and with the revelation that Jack might die, it will make the new few harder to watch. Viewers can expect only five more episodes for the series.
