Tyler Cotton was welcomed to the set of the “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” with a big hug!
The talented newcomer is enjoying his recurring role as Melvin on the very popular Netflix series reimagines the once playful adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch to a dark coming-of-age story that truly involves witchcraft. Get to know Tyler in our up-close interview.
Colleen Bement: Congrats on your role in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Your character is definitely entertaining! Two questions:
1.) How did the cast and crew welcome you to the set?
Tyler Cotton: The cast has been extremely welcoming since the moment I met them. I walked on to set and I went to shake everyone’s hand and Abby smacked my hand out of the way and gave me a big hug!!
2.) Would you happen to have any funny stories from the set? Sabrina fans would love to hear one.
TC: I mean I have so many. Abby and I goofed around together all the time between scenes so I have lots with her. We created a secret handshake between Melvin and Dorcas!
CB: How has your life changed for you since you were cast as Melvin?
TC: A lot, because of this show I got to quit my day job as a server and put all my focus and energy into acting!
CB: Do you have any projects in the works that you are allowed to tell us about?
TC: I can’t say much about it but I’ve got a short film in post-production right now that I’m really excited about.
CB: Tell us about how your father inspired you to get into the entertainment business.
TC: Well my father had a tv show in Calgary called “ThePetGuys” so through that show I got my start in the industry doing commercials, radio spots and I was in an episode or two of the show. My father and I also did some background work together which later lead to me doing background work on “Hell On Wheels”. Both my parents continue to inspire and push me as I continue through this career!
CB: Share a little about your experience on the set of Hell on Wheels with actor Christopher Heyerdahl, and how you made the decision to move to Vancouver.
TC: Well I was toying with the idea of pursuing an acting career for a bit but living in a small town outside of Calgary it was never a reasonable career path and it was even kind of looked down upon by some people so when I was on the set of “Hell On Wheels” I was chatting with Christopher and I brought up that it was something I was wanting to pursue and there was something about talking with him that solidified my choice. On my drive home I called my parents and I said this is what I want to do! I kept leaving the set of “Hell On Wheels” super excited for the next day and I was loving it, and that’s a feeling that I continue to get every time I leave set still! I love what I do! A couple of months later I packed my bags and moved to Vancouver.
CB: I read that you are a huge “Star Wars” fan. Let’s chat about that a bit.
1.) Which of all the nine films is your favorite–or can you even pick one?
TC: “A New Hope” is my all-time favorite movie in general, that’s where it all began!
2.) Are you into the Baby Yoda craze? I definitely am! I already ordered my
TC: Pop Vinyl! Of course! How can you not be! I think “The Mandalorian” did such a great job with baby Yoda!
3.) What Star Wars character would you want to see get his/her/its own
movie?
TC: It’s a bit of a deep cut but I really want to see a movie about “Darth Revan.”
