In the seasons prior “yo” was set roughly a decade before the Kirk’s Enterprise. It’s been quite a feat to visually reimagine the show during that time period as well as adhering to the “Star Trek” canon. Though the extent of that success is up for a measure of debate. Still, these are very strict confines for the writers and production team to work within. Well, that is no longer a problem.
Season 2 wrapped with the Discovery and her crew saving the universe from an evil AI intelligence. They will land well past the events in “Star Trek: Picard” and navigate an entirely new landscape. We will see the Star Trek vision with a backdrop of unfamiliar territory.
The second season proved to be a perfect platform to transition the show. The season was injected with nostalgia as we were given Captain Christopher Pike as a temporary captain of the Discovery, the crew of the Enterprise, and even the Enterprise herself. And then there’s Spock, who proved to be an invaluable member of the cast and a joy to watch on screen. As the show becomes fueled by legacy characters it presents them in a way we have never seen before. At the show’s crescendo, it moves Discovery to the future and leaves these legacy characters to claim center stage. CBS reported that due to the success of season 2, Captain Pike, Spock, and Number 1 will be helming the Enterprise in a spinoff “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.”
This diversion of paths between the two crews should prove to be a win on both sides.
We will see the Discovery cast returning. Season 3 is on the way with no release date set beyond 2020. Showrunners promise that it will be worth the wait.
