In a world where classic video games meet modern animation, Netflix is set to bring us a treat that anime enthusiasts and gaming fanatics have eagerly awaited. “Onimusha,” the iconic Capcom video game series set during Japan’s tumultuous Warring States period, is making its grand entrance into the world of anime. This epic tale of survival and supernatural battles is finally getting its own animated adaptation, and it’s all set to premiere on November 2, 2023. The “Onimusha” series is no stranger to those who have been immersed in the world of gaming for years. Known for its gripping action sequences and historical backdrop, it is a true landmark in the gaming realm. What’s remarkable about this adaptation is that it marks the series’ first foray into anime since it debuted a staggering 22 years ago. The series is finally getting the animated treatment it deserves, and fans are ecstatic.

Taking the helm as the supervising director of “Onimusha” is none other than Takashi Miike (13 Assassins, Blade of the Immortal). Miike’s groundbreaking work in cinematic swordplay, as seen in critically acclaimed films like “13 Assassins” and “Blade of the Immortal,” has won him legions of fans. Alongside him, director Shinya Sugai, celebrated for his work on CG anime “Dragon’s Dogma,” and the animation studio Sublimation are determined to revolutionize the anime landscape with their unique take on “Onimusha.” The writing was done by Hideyuki Kurata (Goblin Slayer, Made in Abyss).

The focal point of this adaptation revolves around the legendary figure Miyamoto Musashi, a character modeled after the late Japanese screen icon Toshiro Mifune. Set in the early Edo Period, a time when Japan was transitioning towards peace and warfare was becoming history, an aging Musashi embarks on a covert mission. Armed with the mythical “Oni Gauntlet,” Musashi embarks on an epic journey to vanquish lurking demons. To add depth and emotion to this spellbinding saga, the main theme song, “THE LONELIEST” by the acclaimed MÃ¥neskin, has been perfectly chosen. The stellar cast includes Akio Otsuka, Hochu Otsuka, Daiki Yamashita, Subaru Kimura, Katsuyuki Konishi, Kazuyuki Okitsu, Makoto Furukawa, Aya Yamane, Ryohei Kimura, and Toshihiko Seki.
