Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience is now open in Downtown Denver, and Nerd Alert News had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the host of this incredible event, LaKendra Tookes. This super-talent is a writer, comedian, and entertainment host known for her sharp wit, cultural perspective, and on-camera versatility. A former Saturday Night Live writer and Access Hollywood correspondent, Tookes offered a perspective that made Van Gogh feel relevant, relatable, and alive for today’s audience. Busy with her podcast Tookes Takes, a hilarious take on reality TV and celebrity culture, Denver’s exhibit was lucky to have her hang out with us.
As the host of Exhibition Hub’s event, Tookes described how unique this immersive experience was. Most everyone has been to a museum where the paintings hang on the wall. With this exhibit, visitors went beyond looking at the painting and went inside the art and mind of Van Gogh himself. The Denver event even had a new display called The Letters Room that showed off the letters that Van Gogh wrote to his brother, Theo. She talked about how inspired she felt seeing and hearing the letters read aloud. And knowing that May is Mental Health Awareness Month, she described how important it was to look at all that Van Gogh went through and the incredible beauty that came out of his suffering. He was able to channel his pain and create the works of art we are so fortunate to enjoy today.
She called the Van Gogh experience “art in motion”, and suggested spending at least 60 minutes in the event. She said it made her want to run to pick up a paint brush after being in a constant state of feeling inspired after walking through those doors. Our interview with LaKendra was not only inspirational, but eye-opening to how important taking care of our mental health was.
