Colleen Bement: What inspired you to create this fun cookbook and are the recipes easy to follow? I’m not that handy in the kitchen, LOL!

Bridget Thoreson: My love for the “Hocus Pocus” movies (and the love many other people have for them!) was my original inspiration for my first cookbook, The Unofficial Hocus Pocus Cookbook. That book was received so well, I was inspired to write a second book specifically geared toward having fun in the kitchen with the kids in your life and sharing the movie with them.

The recipes are extremely easy to follow–many are even easy enough for kids to do on their own. I wanted the book to help kids have fun and also feel empowered in the kitchen so while some things do require adult supervision–like to use the stove, etc.–there are no complicated or advanced cooking techniques that require a lot of practice to execute!

CB: Were any of the recipes tried and tested by any little ones at home?

BT: Yes! My daughter was born right before the first cookbook was published, and she’s been cooking with us in the kitchen since she was 18 months old. She has a set of child-safe knives and loves helping us cut up fruits and vegetables. She tried a lot of the recipes, but her favorite was definitely “Good Zombie” Toast because she had so much fun painting on the bread!

CB: Is “Hocus Pocus” one of your go-to Halloween movies to watch? What are a few others that you put on every year?

BT: Absolutely, I usually watch it at least twice every year! I also love “Twitches” and “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!”

CB: What are your Halloween traditions?

BT: I don’t have too many as an adult, but we will start building some with my daughter now. Mostly it’s just “Hocus Pocus,” candy corn pumpkins (though I can only eat about 5 before I have to stop), and a visit to Sleepy Hollow whenever I can make it up there!

CB: Let me ask you about your other book XOXO, A Cocktail Book, An Unofficial Gossip Girl Fan Book. Just how much of a fan of “Gossip Girl” are you?

BT: The show came out when I was in college, so it’s always been very fun and nostalgic for me. It isn’t something I can watch over and over again, but it is always reliable for a bit of silly fun!

CB: As a person who has burned far too many cakes and cookies by watching “The Great British Baking Show,” what is your secret to successfully following a recipe?

BT: I’m not sure I have a secret as much as I just get really anxious and double check everything way too many times! But really, the best way to cook or bake is to do it slowly. Read slowly, measure slowly, and as with all things, remember to breathe! You’re less likely to miss something or rush through a step.

Get ready for Halloween and order your copy of The Unofficial Hocus Pocus Cookbook for Kids now. It’s only $17.95.
