This talented young star chats about his first leading role, and some exciting projects that he has in the works.

Adam Fox stars in the OUTtv original “Sugar Highs” and his fans want to know more. With this role, he is excited to bring this story to life. Adam identifies as gay and has connected to this part as he was actually at the epicenter of sugar-baby culture while studying at New York University. He has a lot to share from how he found his love for acting to how he traded up from a sketchy apartment to a glorious condo that truly represented him.

“Sugar Highs” recently screened at the IMAGE+NATION festival film LGBTQueer Montreal as part of the I+N@PHI x FMC/CMF SERIES which hosts conversations with Canadian queer cinema, TV and game creators. It can be found onOUTtv.com, the OUTtv Apple TV Channel and OUTtv on The Roku Channel.

Colleen Bement: Congrats on your role in OUTtv original ‘Sugar Highs.’ Love the concept! Just how excited were you to get this series out there, and, tell us what drew you to the material?

Adam Fox: Thank you so much! This role was actually my first major booking since I graduated NYU in 2019, and also my first series lead on a show, so I was literally screaming in my apartment when I got the call. We actually shot Season 1 last fall, but like all good things, editing takes time. Thankfully, it was worth the wait! The show has really connected with its audience and I’ve gotten tons of positive feedback from folks in the LGBTQ+ community and all communities saying how much they enjoy the humor, and unique characters of this show.

I think one of the reasons this show connects so well with the audience is because Thom Fitzgerald is such a gifted writer. Though Thom is a little older than the characters in this show, the voice of the show feels bang-on for the millennial and gen-z world view, while still giving insight into the perspective of the older male and female sugar daddies and mommies. I was honored to represent my community and my generation in this show, and am thrilled it’s been so well-received.

CB: Tell us about your character of Bud. You’re the “brains” of the operation, right?

AF: I sure am! I can’t speak for others, but I know personally I have always wanted to play an HBIC (head-bitch-in-charge) type character, and if you don’t know what I mean, think of Emma Roberts in Scream Queens. I’ll be honest, it feels really good to boss people around and tell people what to do, even if it’s only in character. Though Bud is, at times, unflinchingly bold and assertive, I think what’s great about Thom’s writing is that you get to see the shadow side of Bud’s confidence: his challenging relationship with his mom, his inability to make the right choice when it comes to his love life, and how his financial struggles take a serious toll on his mental health and life. On a lighter note, the other fun aspect to playing Bud is that I am essentially the pimp to the other roommates. I set up their dates, manage their profiles, and ensure they bring home the doe to pay rent. In Thom’s words, I only get more aggressive and brazen in Season 2, so that’s something for you to look forward to next year.

CB: Do you have other projects in the works that you’re allowed to tell us about?

AF: Yes! I recently signed a production agreement with a prominent Canadian showrunner for a series I’m developing called “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Wigs.” It’s an LGBTQ+ comedy series that is a little, “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” meets “To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar” and “Spice World.” On top of that, my team and I have been reading lots of scripts, and I am looking forward to sinking my teeth into something delicious very soon!

CB: What was the very moment that you decided you wanted to be an actor?

AF: Though I was always making characters and accents as a child and teen, I never really considered the entertainment industry as a career path. That is, up until I watched the movie Chloe, at age 16. I can’t say that I immediately knew I wanted to be an actor at that point, but it shifted something in my sensibility, values, and point of view. I stayed on my academic path, ending up at Canada’s Harvard, McGill University, only to decide once and for all I was going to make a hard pivot out of academia and into the entertainment industry. I started with modeling to get some life experience and traveling, up until I was ready to go full throttle into acting, leading me to NYU Tisch, where it was cemented in my heart and mind that this is what I was meant to do.

Q: Were your parents and family supportive?

AF: My parents were never really strict or intervening, so my motivations to go to a great university were completely my own. That being said, I think all parents want to have some assurance their kid will do well in life, so being accepted to McGill was a sigh of relief, and conversely, a loud gasp when I went the other direction. Once they saw my commitment and devotion to acting, they became increasingly supportive. Now, I would say they are my biggest fans and support system. They love Sugar Highs, and contrary to other parents, did not even mention a peep about the nudity or sex scenes in the show. My sister, too, has been incredibly supportive, but that’s always been the case. Suffice to say I am incredibly lucky to have such an amazing family.

Q: I read about some of your apartment living experiences. Boy can I relate from my experiences in my early 20s! What is your place like now, and does it have a decor theme?

AF: From rags to riches darling! Kidding, well sort of. I’ve traded in cockroaches, mice, and creepy roommates for a beautiful, modern condo that is quintessentially me. I bought the condo in February 2020 and spent the first few months of the pandemic renovating and furnishing the place. I think what is special about the condo is that I have put thought, time, and money into every little detail of the place, no stone left unturned, which makes it very unique to me. I would describe it as modern, colorful, cozy, and elegant. It definitely looks very much like an adult apartment, which is funny sometimes when I feel like a hungover teenage gremlin. But yes, given my past experiences, I am incredibly grateful to have a safe, clean, comfortable and functioning apartment with heat, a beautiful view, and filled with beautiful things that bring me joy. I’m grateful for my past as it means I take absolutely nothing for granted!
