Whether the new Netflix horror series “Archive 81” will get a second season on the streaming service is still unclear. The podcast template, on the other hand, already has three seasons with which you can bridge the waiting time.

In the Netflix horror series “Archive 81,” produced by genre expert James Wan (“Conjuring”, “Saw”), young archivist Dan (Mamoudou Athie) is given the task of restoring old videotapes that are almost completely destroyed in a devastating fire became. He comes across footage of the documentary filmmaker Melody (Dina Shihabi), who disappeared years ago and who was researching a dangerous sect in a residential building.

What exactly happened and whether Melody can still be saved is not only a concern for Dan, but also for many Netflix subscribers. In search of answers to the mysteries, quite a few may have already gotten through all eight episodes of the first “Archive 81” season and are now longing for season 2, not least because season 1 ends very openly.

The chances of a sequel are not bad. However, Netflix has not yet confirmed an extension. And yet there are already supplies from the dark world of “Archive 81” elsewhere.

THE “ARCHIVE 81“ PODCAST

If you don’t skip the opening credits of “Archive 81,” but follow them closely, you will read there that the series is based on the podcast of the same name by Daniel Powell and Marc Sollinger. For those who first think of real-life chats or round tables on science, politics, culture, and crime when they think of podcasts, there is no need to fear that the horrific events in “Archive 81” have real roots.

Instead, the podcast is a kind of radio play series, a fictional audio horror series that relies entirely on a found footage concept. In this case, this means that the story is told in the form of audio snippets recorded by the characters. In a modified form, this element has also found its way into the series adaptation (instead of audio, there are video recordings here), even if this does not consist exclusively of it.

(Here is the first episode of the podcast!)

The “Archive 81” podcast even has three seasons (and some additional episodes) that were released between 2016 and 2018. However, if you are hoping to find out how the Netflix version of the main character Dan will continue in this way, we will have to disappoint you. The main features of the story – archivist Dan and a woman named Melody deal with a cult in an apartment building – are the same in the podcast and series adaptation, but towards the end of the first season, the events differ quite significantly.

Season 2 of the Netflix series should therefore take a slightly different path than Season 2 of the podcast template, even if it is quite conceivable that individual story elements will be used here and there. Nevertheless, the podcast is ideal for making comparisons between the original and the adaptation and diving even deeper into the world of “Archive 81”.
