Inconceivable!

Ravensburger has made another unique game out of a famous IP. This time the beloved movie of many, The Princess Bride.

In short, this game lets you play through the story of the movie. Each chapter has a unique setup with the specific characters in that portion of the story. The basic premise is to succeed in the challenges of each chapter.

To start. Players set up the game based on what chapter of the story they are playing, The game uses the book itself as the board. Areas are sectioned off and numbered. Place the characters in their starting positions. Add the required tokens and then take the story cards and the special cards following the instructions and set them up. Take the interruption token and place it with the grandson facing up. Deal 4 story cards and determine the first player.

One interesting part of the gameplay is that no one player plays a specific character. Players use the story cards to move the characters from the chapter and to complete the goals it requires. The main mechanism is card collecting and using as resources for taking actions on a player’s turn. Each goal has a number of card types that need to be used to complete the goal. Goals may also have to be completed in specific areas of the board as well. Certain actions can trigger a story interruption, much like how the grandson interrupted his grandfather reading it. Too many interruptions and players lose.

The game is fully cooperative where the players are working to complete the goals of the story; using the characters in that chapter. Collecting and using the right combination of cards is the challenge to succeed in the game.

Fans of “The Princess Bride” will most likely find this an enjoyable time playing through the movie in a simple, yet challenging experience. Some seasoned gamers, who enjoy heavier games, may find the gameplay simple and eventually monotonous. I think this is a great family game that even the younger kids could enjoy immensely. While it may not be a good fit for every gamer, this lightweight strategy game can provide great enjoyment to fans of the franchise. It makes a great starter game for new gamers as well.
