Our Nerd Nite Denver Queen, Hanna Aucoin welcomed new and faithful returning audience members with an introduction to the history of Nerd Nite.

She started the night talking about an organism trapped in a halite crystal reminding us how absurd it is to find an organism trapped in a rock! (queue the Jurassic Park music). For those unfamiliar with the Nerd Nite events, they are basically like Ted Talks, but with alcohol and humor! The audience laughs while learning about fun and interesting topics, and asks highly intelligent questions.

The event traces its roots back over 10 years to these two men, Christopher Balakrishnan and Matt Wasowski who were just telling stories in a bar. Now Nerd Nites are now held in more than 90 cities across the globe. Denverites enjoy the event at The Bug Theatre and laugh and learn while enjoying a beverage or two! Check out some of our previous coverage of Nerd Nites here.

Be sure to mark those calendars for future Nerd Nite events by staying glued to their website and socials.

Tonight, Crypto Currency was explained by Ian Kimsey. He started out by asking how many had actually bought or mined crypto and maybe 20% of the room had raised hands. Kimsey explained that crypto started out as E-Gold. Digital currency was created by Dr. Douglas Jackson in 1996. It was used to buy sketchy things and they were arrested. Then along came PayPal in 2000. Originally as an online payment service. Progressing in 2006-2013 there was Liberty Reserve. Finally, in 2008, Bitcoin’s white paper was introduced and on Jan. 3rd, 2009 Bitcoin was launched. Following there has been Dodgecoin, Litecoin, and Ethereum. We learned what a blockchain was. Basically it’s a gigantic ledger like a digital wallet. Coinbase is an example of one of these. It all sounded pretty complicated and the mining of crypto is ridiculously crazy. He even touched on the absurdness of NFTs.

Myths and Mysteries of the Moon were debunked and explained by Dr. Bill Farrand. He opened by talking about the dawn of the “impact crater.” Long ago people thought the theory was crazy. They honestly thought it was due to geological impacts such as volcanos. How about flying saucers? Yes, they thought that also. Nope! Of course they are impact craters caused by debris hitting the lunar surface. As a matter of fact, people are still trying to find stuff on the moon. Lately, the Chinese found a “hut” that, shocker, turned out to be just a boulder. Could there actually be artifacts on the moon? Well, things could last on the moon for tens of thousands of years…so…maybe?

What about water on the moon? There are craters on the north and south poles where the sun never reaches where ice could persist. There is still work to be done with this subject, but there’s some research that there could be craters that have some hydration.

He who controls the spice controls the universe! The History of the US War on Drugs by Keith Von Sprecken.

This legit comedian had people laughing while being educated on this serious subject. Basically it is a forever war like Orwell said. It shows no signs of stopping. He asked people if they wanted to have less pain, more energy, and higher creativity. It is crazy what drugs can do for people.

America went to war on drugs. He said that it is nuts to even try. Drugs started in nature. Von Sprecken delivered cheek-hurting comedy as he explained how drugs affect animals. Dolphins pass around a puffer fish. Cats and their catnip, of course. Reindeer like mushrooms, and ended with what animal likes to get fucked up the most? Bees! They love fermented alcohol. Watch out while barbequing!
