Eugene Levy shares five shots of vodka with his Finland hosts, and the next day, he is talked into swimming in ice water. In Costa Rica, he comes face to face with deadly poisonous spiders and snakes and wonders why people would want to vacation among these creatures. He finally gets to a fancy hotel made up of ornate gold from centuries past, a comfy bed, and room service, then worries about the canal waters of Venice flooding his room! In his new series “The Reluctant Traveler” he reluctantly tries these fabulous new experiences at fascinating and beautiful destinations. This unique spin on a travel show takes the former “Schitt’s Creek” star to Finland, Japan, South Africa, and elsewhere and takes the audience along with him. I am doing things I would never, ever have done, says Levy.
Levy announced to the audience, I made my point – you’ve got the wrong person is what I was telling them, because I can’t be myself and host the travel show where I seem like I’m excited about everything. They talked to each other after that call, and they got so excited about the fact that that’s now the show: He just doesn’t like to travel, but he’s gonna be hosting a travel show and that’s a good hook.
I’m coming out of this a more enlightened person, who ultimately would still rather be on the couch at home, he added. Out of all the interesting places that he visited, it was South Africa that truly resonated with him. Being [in South Africa], it only took maybe two days before I really felt an affinity for the place and it seemed like I was feeling quite attached in the strangest way. To actually get to go to a rhino conservancy, and actually see these orphaned rhinos that are being saved … the idea of animals becoming extinct hit me in a very big way when I was there. … If I hadn’t gone to South Africa … you read it as a headline … and your life goes on, it just doesn’t hit you. But when you’re there, you realize this is really sad.
“The Reluctant Traveler” is captivating and funny, and the photography is beautiful. The series can be watched on AppleTV+ and it’s well worth the watch. “Schitt’s Creek” fans will definitely enjoy watching one of their favorites travel the world after six seasons in Roland Schitt’s town!
