Meet Greta Carew-Johns. This remarkable talent switched careers from practicing law in Brisbane, Australia to shining on film and television. She was actually halfway through her dual degree of Laws and Commerce when she caught the acting bug! Known for The CW’s “Supergirl” and ABC’s “A Million Little Things,” the Christmas romcom TV movie, “Meeting Mr. Christmas,” CBS’ “Early Edition,” and the TV thriller, “The Pregnancy Scheme.” Now catch her as the voice of Sara, one of the lead characters in Curiouscast’s popular scripted podcast “Escaping Denver.” For those new to the podcast, “Escaping Denver” follows Sara (Greta Carew-Johns) and Noah (Brady Roberts) as they wake up in complete darkness, trapped miles below the Denver International Airport with no hope for escape. Share Sara’s and Noah’s perilous journey as they struggle for freedom from a mind-bending labyrinth filled with unimaginable horrors. Seasons one and two of “Escaping Denver” are available now on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, Season three will premiere Summer of 2023.
Colleen Bement: Being a Denverite myself, I’ve heard all about the conspiracy theories surrounding the Denver International Airport. Let’s start out with that horse, Blucifer! It always shoots a little fear through my body every time I drive into DIA. Then there’s that terrifying painting of the apocalypse. I could go on and on! Before you landed the role of Sara on “Escaping Denver,” had you heard about the DIA conspiracies?
Greta Carew-Johns: I had not. It was all news to me. The creators Mike Howrun and Brady Roberts started clueing me in when we began working together. I was fascinated, and mind blown. Where Mike has been able to take listeners with his writing is nothing short of incredible.
CB: What would you say to someone who hasn’t started listening to “Escaping Denver’ yet?
GCJ: Immediately reevaluate your life choices. Just kidding. You’re in for a treat.
Basically, it’s a fun way to digest some of the craziest conspiracy theories out there (including Bigfoot) all wrapped up in a singular thrilling adventure. The story follows Sara (played by me) and Noah (Brady Roberts) who wake up in complete darkness, trapped miles below the Denver International Airport (DIA). They struggle to escape from a mind-bending labyrinth filled with unimaginable horrors.
Seasons 1 and 2 are available now and the first episode of Season 3 has just been released anywhere you listen to podcasts. Also, check out @escapingdenver on Instagram to see some amazing visual depictions that have been created of what our characters are seeing.
CB: What are you allowed to share about season 3 of “Escaping Denver?”
GCJ: I won’t give away much. Let’s just say, Sara gets to see a different side of the facility, and … we get to see a very different side of Sara.
CB: Have you been to DIA and if so, what did you think of it?
GCJ: I haven’t yet. But I plan on doing lots of travel to the US over the next year so I’m sure I’ll find myself there at some point soon. I’ll be on the lookout for Blucifer and the painting of the apocalypse.
CB: What was it like leaving Australia for Vancouver?
GCJ: It was daunting to say the least. It was a massive sacrifice in terms of leaving my family, friends, my boyfriend, the city I have lived in my whole life. There were differences and adjustments I expected (the weather, driving on the other side of the road for example) but many that I was not expecting (differences in lifestyle, banking and phone companies, difficulties making friends). So far it has been worth it as I make strides towards my dreams.
CB: Would you happen to have a story from the set of The CW’s “Supergirl?”
GCJ: This was my first time on a big set in Vancouver and I had been watching Supergirl since arriving (as well as other shows filmed in Vancouver) so I would know what they were about. Seeing these actors on TV and then now acting with them – I was a little star-struck honestly. So, we had a first read-through with the cast before getting into the scene. When it came time for my lines I just blanked. I was having an out-of-body experience. I couldn’t believe I was on their set watching them. I laughed it off, got into character and everything turned out fine, but I still cringe thinking of that moment. I had the pleasure of working with Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh, Jesse Rath, David Harewood, and director, Stefan Pleszczynski who made me feel quite at home and very welcomed.
CB: What a complete 180 switch from Laws and Commerce degrees to an acting career. How did that happen?
GCJ: It was a bit of a shock to everyone, including me, I have to say. I didn’t really know what area I wanted to get into after school, so I did dual degrees at university to cover everything business, finance, and law. I had no real conscious thought about acting as a career at that time I don’t think. I thought I wanted to be in the corporate world. It wasn’t until towards the end of my degrees that the interest sparked again (it had initially sparked after an oral presentation in Grade 10 English class). I’m trying to remember why and in thinking about it recently I wonder whether it was that I met a girl (now longtime friend) in Law School in my second last year of university. She was completing a dual degree also, Arts/Laws, and one of the subjects she was studying was acting. I remember feeling a little jealous that she was doing acting. It hadn’t really occurred to me. I thought I was covering all the bases of the career into which I might want to embark. I think it was around this time I started taking classes at NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) and taking an interest in acting. But it wasn’t until my 4th-year post-admission as a lawyer that I decided to leave the law. I wasn’t fulfilled by my job and had a very strong yearning to be an actress in the film and television industry. I felt I had to give it a try.
