Hogwarts Legacy is the most anticipated Harry Potter game with a lot of playtime and quests, and soon we can finally play it. But what awaits us?

Playtime in Hogwarts Legacy

Even before the release of Hogwarts Legacy, there is a lot of information about the approximate playing time. The following information emerges from an artbook leak that was published on Reddit:

Playing time for the story: ~35 hours

Playing time for all optional activities or 100%: ~70 hours

If you really want to do everything in Hogwarts Legacy, you’ll be busy for well over 100 hours.

The Game

In Hogwarts Legacy, you must first choose a house for which you want to start the adventure. These already bring some differences, such as different common rooms. If you really want to get to know every house, you can look forward to the increased replay value.

All other known information about the scope and content is listed below:

-Magic, of course, plays a big role in the game. There are said to be 26 spells in total in Hogwarts Legacy. This also includes the killing curse Avada Kedavra, which you can probably use without having to fear penalties.

There will be a total of 150 missions throughout the game. 50 of them make up the main story and 100 are optional. The latter sometimes differ greatly in scope.

There are 100 Merlin puzzles in the game that you can solve by using learned spells.

Not only are you free to move around Hogwarts and the school grounds, but you can also explore villages, forests, and other areas outside of Hogwarts on foot and on your broomstick.

Depending on the house you choose, there are slight differences in the main missions. But in the end, it all comes down to the same end result.

In addition, NPCs react differently to you depending on the house you choose. Classmates in the same school are more likely to be well-disposed toward you.

At Hogwarts you can also complete some mini-games with Quaffles (from Quidditch). However, Quidditch itself is not playable.

As in every open-world game, there are of course all sorts of collectibles to discover. This includes manual pages that tell you more about the game world.

Do I need to know Harry Potter to play Hogwarts Legacy?

The short answer is: No. Of course, Hogwarts Legacy is primarily aimed at fans of the Wizarding World. But you can still understand and enjoy the game if you haven’t touched it before. Of course, the developers want their game to appeal to the widest possible audience and would never claim that you have to be a hardcore fan to understand everything.

But there are also different aspects that we already know about that should make it easier for newcomers to get started:

Hogwarts Legacy takes place before Harry Potter

The role-playing game takes place in the 19th century, a full century before the events in the books. Of course, events that are part of the overall lore will crop up from time to time. Or we encounter names that we may already know from the books – such as Headmaster Black. But that shouldn’t be too much of a hindrance for new magic students. Because the story and characters of Hogwarst Legacy were written for the game and are not directly linked to the events of Harry Potter.

New hero/heroine

Our protagonist is not Harry Potter either, but a self-created character. So we can be whoever we want in this world. It lets us write our own stories. It also introduces completely new elements – like ancient magic – that even Potterheads don’t know yet.

The game tells you a lot

Hogwarts Legacy works like any other game and provides you with helpful tutorials and explanations. New spells are explained to you as game mechanics. Since our character only starts in the fifth school year and has to catch up on Hogwarts for four years himself, not only our witchers or our wizards are supported by the Ministry of Magic’s handbook. We as players also benefit from the explanations and background information.

Do you play Hogwarts Legacy? And if so, are you also a fan of Harry Potter? Or is this completely new to you?
