Fandom Wire has reported that Charlie Cox has signed on to appear as Matt Murdock/Daredevil in a new Marvel Disney Plus series titled “Secret Invasion alongside Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Ben Mendelsohn (Talos). The series is expected to be an adaptation of the comic series, “Secret Invasion.”  In the comic series,  alien shapeshifters, the Skrulls, have taken the forms of many different heroes in an effort to take over Earth.  Few details are available however it is possible “Secret Invasion” will lead to a number of high-profile character returns.  Disney plus announced the series late last year at their Investor Day.  At the time, Cox was not attached to the project.

Cox portrayed Daredevil for three seasons on the critically acclaimed Netflix series “Daredevil.”  The show ended in 2018 but Cox was contractually prohibited from reprising the role for a two-year period which has now expired.  There have been rumors that Cox has already signed on for the Untitled Spider-Man sequel to portray Murdock/ Daredevil.  The Spider-Man movie has already signed on several former cast members from different Spider-Man films through the years, including Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus, Jamie Fox as Electro, and Tom Holland as Spider-Man.  Unconfirmed reports have claimed Andrew Garfield, Willem Dafoe, Kirstin Dunst, and Tobey Maguire will also reprise their roles for the film.  The upcoming Spider-Man film has also cast Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange.  It is easy to imagine how Matt Murdock/ Daredevil could fit into the film.

Cox coming on as Daredevil in the upcoming Spider-Man film, and the Disney plus “Secret Invasion” series, would link Cox’s Daredevil to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.  This could open the door to other Netflix MCU character comebacks like Jessica Jones or The Punisher.  After the two-year contractual hold that started in 2018, Marvel studios just got rights back to both franchises. This is great news for Marvel, and for fans of the shows.  Could we see Krysten Ritter reprise her role in a future Marvel film?  Will Jon Bernthal’s Punisher make an appearance?  Now that Marvel owns the rights, it is likely we have not seen the last of these characters.
