One of the most anticipated “Star Wars” projects officially wrapped filming and moved to post-production status.  IMDb Pro changed the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” Series status to post-production today, ending speculation based on cast tweets and Instagram posts.  The 6-episode limited series has endured many challenges since it was officially announced at Disney’s D23 event in 2019.  After the original script was deemed unacceptable, Disney brought on a new writer.  The delay frustrated and scared fans who feared the project would be scrapped.  Covid impacted the timeline as well.  When filming started in late spring, fans breathed a sigh of relief.  Now, this new milestone brings the series one step closer to its’ release, likely next year.

The “Obi-Wan Kenobi” Series follows the beloved Jedi ten years after the events in “Revenge of the Sith,” while on Tatooine, as he secretly watches over Luke.  The series will fill a huge time gap in Obi-Wan’s story between his showdown with Anakin in “Revenge of the Sith” to his famous lightsaber duel as a much older Jedi in “A New Hope.”

The show will see the return of Hayden Christensen as Anakin/ Vader.  It is likely the two will face off in the series, but how that will fit into the story remains a mystery.  Casting has been somewhat guarded.  The impressive list of actors includes Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, Joel Edgerton, Simone Kessel, Kumail Nanjiani, and Moses Ingram.  All but Joel, Ewan, and Hayden were listed as ‘actress’ or ‘actor’ in the cast listing.  Rumors are circulating on the roles and plot, but Disney has kept even the most basic details secret.

Ewan McGregor was relieved in 2019 after Disney made the formal announcement about the show.   He had known for a long time that a project was imminent, and expressed discomfort with having to deflect questions about a potential return. “It got difficult,” McGregor said (via Flickering Myth).  “I was brought up to tell the truth, and I was in a situation where I wasn’t really allowed to.”

McGregor has had a busy and successful year.  His performance in the Netflix Series “Halston” earned him an Emmy nomination.  It was recently announced that he would portray George Mallory, opposite Sam Heughan,  in the anticipated film “Everest.”  He also scored a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with a unveiling ceremony likely next year.  In addition, he completed filming in Guillermo del Toro’s  “Pinocchio,” and appeared in “The Birthday Cake” movie, recently released on DVD (see trailer below).  His voice talent is featured in the CNN documentary series, “Jerusalem-City of Faith and Fury,” currently airing.  In his personal life he and his partner welcomed a baby boy, born in June.

While the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” Series does not have an official release date yet, it is almost certain to be next year.  Fans can look forward to release news and perhaps teaser clips.  In the meantime, check out the many amazing fan-made trailers on YouTube.
