Some things are hidden for a reason. Find out why!

Welcome to the Halloween season with the hot new horror film called “From The Shadows.” Multiple Emmy Award-winning actor Keith David takes us inside the making of this terrifying movie, and according to David what makes this film so scary is that it is believable. Directed by Mike Sargent and written by Mike Kuciak, the vibe puts viewers on the edge right from the beginning. Sharing the screen with David are Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Bruce Davison and Selena Anduze. It is time for a fresh new film, horror fans, and “From The Shadows” is definitely worth a watch.

Now let’s dive into our interview with the fabulous Keith David. Alongside his Emmys are the NAACP Image Award for Best Supporting Actor, and a Tony Nomination. This classically trained star is no stranger to fandom. We know and love his voice from countless favorites such as “Adventure Time”, “Bojack Horseman,” “Rick & Morty”, “Spawn”, and “Gargoyles”. Horror fans recently saw him in “Nope,” and he recently co-starred in Chadwick Boseman’s last film “21 Bridges.” His list of credits just rolls on with roles in films such as “Night School” with Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish and “Tales from the Hood 2”. Stay tuned to his Instagram for fun, inspiration, and some exciting projects in the works.

Get to know Keith David

Colleen Bement: I appreciate this opportunity to chat with you about your exciting new film “From The Shadows.” I watched the screener with my husband and we absolutely loved it. We kept holding our breath during some of the scenes! My first question for you is what attracted you to the script and to the role of Dr. Leonard Bertram?

Keith David: First of all, I loved the opportunity to work with Bruce Davison. I didn’t know Mike Sargent (screenwriter) when I started out, but the more I got to know him I just loved some of the conversations we had. But you know what attracts me to any project is the story, and in today’s world, this is a believable story. I was on my way. The right place at the right time. The stars aligned. I was happy to be a part of it

CB: What was the atmosphere like on set? Were there any challenges? Do you have any stories that you can share with us?

KD: There are always challenges on a set. What I loved was that, with the budget that they did have, they made everything work. It was smooth sailing from the time I arrived on set. First of all, I had a 4-hour makeup job. They made it as pleasant as possible. The makeup department was TOP NOTCH. Some of the best makeup artists with whom I’ve ever worked; I’d work with them again anytime. If I could request anyone, it would be them. They were the best.

CB: What was it like having the make up applied to create your “melted face?”

KD: It was beautiful. Sitting in a makeup chair for 4 hours isn’t exactly what most would call fun, but I was delighted to do it. Actually, it was quite fun. You get to see every stage of it, then you get to see the final product and it’s like “Wow!” It was especially interesting to know that the makeup was based on a real condition that people get in certain parts of the world; it causes that facial distortion.

CB: Is there a part of your character that you can identify with?

KD: I like to think I am as smart as he is hahaha. Or at least have the potential to be as smart as he is. Also, as human beings, we are always fighting to balance our internal moral code and to have some kind of moral compass…until it goes to the dark side. I did enjoy the struggle of it because it is indicative of who we are.

CB: Let’s switch gears. Congratulations on your NAACP Image Award for your role in “From Scratch.” You’ve taken home Emmys. You’ve become a household name for your voice work. Yet, I have a feeling, this award meant a lot to you. Can you tell us more about it?

KD: We don’t work to get awards. However, when we do get acknowledgment from our fans and peers, it is truly icing on the cake. It was magnificent enough to be able to have the opportunity to have such a great job, and that in itself is an award. Sometimes you’re lucky enough to get an extra layer of acknowledgment. There’s never anything wrong with that.

CB: I encourage everyone to follow your Instagram. It’s entertaining. It’s touching. Sometimes it’s quite powerful. A few of your posts caused me to pause, and to breathe. From where do you draw your inspiration for your posts, and do you enjoy interacting with your fans?

KD: I definitely enjoy interacting with my fans. I get my inspiration from a higher power, who I am not afraid to call God. My mother, father, brother, sister, God. Every once in a while I am moved to say something that resonates with me, and hopefully resonates with all of us.

CB: Your voice is amazing and so well-known. Is music a part of your life? Do you sing? Play an instrument?

KD: You haven’t seen enough of my Instagram hahaha. Yes, music is everything. Check out my insta @silverthroat. I have a lot of singing gigs coming up.

CB: Halloween is around the corner, and I’m curious: Are you a fan of this time of year? Do you do anything special for the spooky season?

KD: Yes, we used to live in a big family-oriented neighborhood. My wife always had a tradition of making her special chili for the whole neighborhood on Halloween. We are now empty nesters, however, I still encourage her to make it. I always look forward to my Halloween chili fest, and I love handing out candy! One of my favorite times of the year.

CB: My final question is what was the very moment that you decided you wanted to be an actor?

KD: I don’t know if it chose me or I chose it; I think it chose me. I wanted to be an actor my whole life. I can’t tell you exactly when that started, but I can tell you that even at 2 years old I was singing and entertaining. I was in my first play at 9 and I haven’t stopped.
