For its fourth year, Halloween X-SPO returns to the Spokane Convention Center in the heart of downtown Spokane on Saturday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, October 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. With crisp autumn air, vivid Pacific Northwest colors, and Halloween just around the corner, Spokane provides the backdrop for a weekend packed with horror, fandom, artists, creators, and surprises along the way.
The guest list is exquisitely frightening. Kellen Goff of ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s,’ Dave Sheridan of ‘Scary Movie,’ Felissa Rose of ‘Sleepaway Camp,’ Lochlyn Munro of ‘Freddy vs. Jason’ and ‘Scary Movie,’ Jason Faunt of ‘Power Rangers Time Force,’ Eugene Clark of ‘Land of the Dead,’ William Vail of ‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,’ and more!
The creative side of the show is just as packed, with animation, special effects, monster art, illustration, graphic art, and horror publishing represented by artists including Dave Warren of ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Pinky & The Brain,’ Joseph J. Schultz of ‘Hellraiser’ and ‘Candyman,’ Chad Scheres, Ara Gotham, Derek Landers, Brendon of Neon BoneYard, and Kevin Glover of Scary Tales Publishing.
But wait, there’s more!
Over 150 vendors, artists, and creators will fill the Spokane Convention Center, alongside free programming featuring guest Q&As, panels, live magic, tarot readings, open gaming, short films, and stunt performances from Fear Frontier Sliders. Plus, what horror convention would be complete without a costume contest? The adult costume contest takes the stage Saturday at 4 p.m., while the youth costume contest takes place Sunday at 2 p.m. There will also be free photo booths, enamel pin trading, and plenty of opportunities to embrace the season in all its haunted glory.
The Halloween X-SPO fun starts before the convention doors even open. On Friday, October 9, from 5 to 10 p.m., The Onion Taphouse & Grill will host a Halloween X-SPO ‘Drink & Draw.’ Bring some art supplies, grab a drink, and settle in for an early start to the weekend.
The horror even continues after the convention floor closes. At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, the Garland Theater will screen ‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,’ with William Vail, who played Kirk in the 1974 horror classic, appearing for the event. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
And apparently, Halloween has a heart beneath all that darkness. Twenty-five percent of official X-SPO merchandise sales will benefit the Spokane Fires Disaster Relief Fund through the Red Cross, while a dedicated food drive will collect non-perishable items for Our Place Community Outreach. Every donated item earns a raffle ticket toward a $200 horror-movie prize package, with additional instant prizes available for larger donations. Following the devastating fires in the Spokane area this summer, it’s a meaningful way for the convention and its attendees to give back.
Families are encouraged to secure their admission early. Tickets are available in advance through TicketsWest, with VIP and weekend pass options available. Kids 12 and under get in free with a paid adult admission.
So if you happen to see a horde of zombies, a couple of pro wrestlers, and a guy revving a chainsaw walking down Spokane Falls Boulevard, don’t worry. It’s just a perfectly normal, quiet weekend in Spokane. Mostly.
