2001 was a pretty terrifying year.
Everyone remembers September 11th, yet not everyone thinks about the Anthrax terrorist attack on the United States. Every time Americans went to the mailbox back in 2001, there was fear and apprehension with every envelope. Now, National Geographic will take us back through those days as this crime story unfolded, layer by layer, to reveal a surprising prime suspect. Daniel Dae Kim and Tony Goldwyn co-star in the series that was inspired by the true events that claimed five lives and threw the country into a panic.
The synopsis:
THE HOT ZONE: ANTHRAX, inspired by true events, follows parallel stories of Matthew Ryker (Kim) and Dr. Bruce Ivins (Goldwyn). Ryker, an FBI agent with a specialty in microbiology, risks his career to convince his superiors of the unthinkable just three weeks after the 9/11 attacks: The United States is under attack again. Ivins, a brilliant microbiologist who becomes embroiled in the hunt to find the 2001 anthrax killer, works closely with the FBI to uncover who is behind the deadly anthrax letters, while his growing instability and paranoia give way to deeper unnerving discoveries.
“The Hot Zone” is an anthology series by Nat Geo that started with episodes on the Ebola outbreak that was handled by Julianna Margulies and it was the network’s most-watched scripted series ever. This next chapter looks back at the moments when anthrax was found on Capitol Hill.
Along with Kim and Goldwyn, the talented cast brings to life what the brave FBI agents handled during those terrifying days. There was FBI Special Agent Dani Toretti played by Dawn Olivieri, who maneuvered through the “boys club” to be one of the first agents on the ground at the Capitol Hill anthrax attack. Then there was newbie FBI agent Chris Moore (Ian Colletti) who was eager and ready to go. Then there was high-ranking FBI agent Ed Copak (Dylan Baker) who felt the enormous responsibility to get justice. There was also a cocky agent named Eric Sykes (Morgan Kelly) who mocked Ryker for his hunt. Other actors include Vanessa Matsui, Carlos Gonzalez-Vio, and Enrico Colantoni plays Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and Harry Hamlin plays the steadfast and trusted voice of news anchor Tom Brokaw. The showrunners were Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson, and the production company was Scott Free Productions.
