A 10-year-old finds himself on a NASA secret mission to the moon.

There is nothing like seeing through the eyes of a child with a brilliant imagination, and thanks to director Richard Linklater (Boyhood” and A Scanner Darkly) and Netflix, audiences be transported back to 1969 with the new film “Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood.” This animated production just enjoyed its world premiere at this year’s SXSW in Austin, TX. It was attended by many of its cast and crew including Richard Linklater, Danielle Guilbot, Sam Chipman, Natalie L’Amoreaux, and more.

The film brings back the nostalgia of 1969 and captures what it was like to witness the Apollo 11 moon landing. Everyone watching at the time has their own memories of witnessing the first time a human stepped onto the moon’s surface. Imagine a 10-year-old getting to take part in a covert operation that takes him into space. While the rest of the kids are playing with model rockets, this kid is training to go into space on a real rocket. Linklater called the project “a memory of a fantasy” (via Deadline). This truly wonderful story takes the audience on a journey through a kid’s imagination and what life was like back in 1969. It stars Zachary Levi, Jack Black, Glen Powell, Lee Eddy and introduces Milo Coy as Stan. There is even a “Star Wars” nod with a NASA rep telling the kid “You’re our only hope.” The movie releases on Netflix in the US on April 1st, and in select theaters on March 25th. The run time is 97 minutes.

Synopsis:

Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood tells the story of the first moon landing in the summer of 1969 from two interwoven perspectives – the astronaut and mission control view of the triumphant moment, and through the eyes of a kid growing up in Houston, Texas who has intergalactic dreams of his own. Taking inspiration from Academy Award-nominated® filmmaker Richard Linklater’s own life, Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood is a snapshot of American life in the 1960s that is part coming of age, part societal commentary, and part out-of-this-world adventure.
