Film explores the cosmos and the human heart

In the vast expanse of the cosmos where time seems to stretch into infinity, human emotions can feel both magnified and insignificant. It’s within this backdrop that “Spaceman,” directed by Johan Renck and based on Jaroslav Kalfař’s novel “Spaceman of Bohemia,” takes us on a journey through space and the inner workings of the human heart. Starring Adam Sandler, this film showcases his talent as it delves into somber and introspective territory. It sheds light on the depths of human emotion in isolation.

The film’s synopsis reads six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, an astronaut, Jakub (Adam Sandler), realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth. Desperate to fix things with his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan), he is helped by a mysterious creature from the beginning of time he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship. Hanuš (voiced by Paul Dano) works with Jakub to make sense of what went wrong before it is too late. Directed by Johan Renck and based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia, the film also stars Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin, and Isabella Rossellini.

Amidst the vast emptiness of space, Jakub finds an unexpected companion in Hanuš, a mysterious creature voiced by Paul Dano, who emerges from the depths of his ship. Together, they embark on a journey of self-discovery and redemption, grappling with the complexities of time, love, and forgiveness. For Kalfař, the journey of “Spaceman” began as a humble short story, a mere punch line about an astronaut facing divorce while stranded in orbit. “I really wanted to have a performance from him that had nothing to do with the Adam Sandler we all know,” director Johan Renck told Netflix. “I don’t think people understand how [although] he may come across as funny and sweet and all that, he’s very intelligent, really smart, profound.”

“Spaceman” streams starting tomorrow, March 1st on Netflix.
