Ultraman will discover that his greatest challenge isn’t fighting giant monsters – it’s raising one.

For over 50 years, the iconic Japanese superhero has been protecting the Earth against monsters and many fans have been watching him since the 60s. Now Ultraman gets a new look and an added cuteness factor that will entertain all ages. When Tokyo is threatened by rising monster attacks, baseball star Ken Sato reluctantly returns home to take on the mantle of Ultraman. But the titanic superhero meets his match when he is forced to adopt a 35-foot-tall, fire-breathing baby kaiju. Thrown into instant parenthood, he’ll have to face the challenges of raising a “baby” along with fighting the forces that are bent on destroying him.

In partnership with Netflix, Tsuburaya Productions, and Industrial Light & Magic, “Ultraman: Rising” is written by Shannon Tindle and Marc Haimes, directed by Shannon Tindle, and co-directed by John Aoshima. The cast includes Tamlyn Tomita, Gedde Watanabe, Keone Young, Julia Harriman, and Christopher Sean as Ultraman. The original 1966 television series was created by Eiji Tsuburaya and Tetsuo Kinjo, and there have been many incarnations of the beloved character since. The film is out of the United States instead of Japan, but the storyline looks promising and the animation looks good.

The director, Shannon Tindle, stated that everything about “Ultraman: Rising” sprung from the initial concept of what if I took a character who doesn’t want to be Ultraman, who kind of messes up his job on one of his early outings and as a result of it has to adopt the baby of his enemy?

Fans of the original series will hopefully enjoy it, and those who are new to the Ultraman character will be introduced to this reimagined hero. Tindle also stated that you don’t have to know anything about Ultraman to enjoy this movie. Hopefully, you’ll laugh and you’ll cry and you’ll cheer and maybe at the end you’ll come to love Ultraman. That’d be pretty cool too.

“Ultraman: Rising” is coming to Netflix on June 14th, 2024.
