There is no shortage of horror films centered around mysterious creatures lurking in the wilderness, but Sawtooth Mountain manages to carve out its own identity by focusing just as much on human nature as the monster itself. Written and directed by Matt Kincses, the film combines survival horror, psychological suspense, and cryptid folklore into an unsettling experience that steadily builds tension from beginning to end.
The story follows three college students who escape to a remote, Bigfoot themed cabin expecting nothing more than a memorable weekend away. Instead, they find themselves caught in a nightmare orchestrated by circumstances far more dangerous than they ever anticipated. As paranoia grows and trust begins to unravel, the isolated setting becomes as much of an antagonist as whatever may be lurking in the surrounding wilderness.

Rather than relying on constant jump scares, Sawtooth Mountain takes its time establishing an atmosphere of unease. The remote mountain setting creates an ever present feeling of vulnerability, with the dense forests and quiet isolation serving as a reminder that help is nowhere nearby. The film understands that what audiences don’t see can often be more frightening than what they do, allowing suspense to build naturally before delivering its biggest moments.
The cast works well together, creating believable relationships that make the escalating danger feel personal. Sydney Scotia delivers a grounded performance that gives the audience someone to emotionally invest in, while Landon Liboiron and Gabriel Carter help create a believable dynamic that evolves as the situation becomes increasingly desperate. As fear takes hold, each character is forced to make impossible decisions, and the performances keep those moments feeling authentic.

One of the film’s strongest qualities is its willingness to keep viewers questioning what is really happening. Is the greatest threat the legendary creature itself, or the people whose obsession with the unknown has blurred the line between fascination and madness? That uncertainty fuels much of the film’s suspense and prevents it from becoming a conventional creature feature.
Visually, the mountain landscapes are both beautiful and intimidating. The sweeping forests and secluded cabin provide the perfect backdrop for a story built around isolation, while the cinematography effectively shifts between breathtaking scenery and claustrophobic terror. The sound design also deserves recognition, using the silence of the wilderness and the noises that interrupt it to heighten the tension throughout.

Fans expecting nonstop creature action may find the film’s deliberate pacing slower than anticipated during its opening act. However, the patience pays off as the story steadily raises the stakes and delivers a satisfying third act that embraces both its psychological and horror elements without abandoning the mystery that drives the narrative. Sawtooth Mountain doesn’t capture its audience by proving whether Bigfoot exists or not. It explores how fear, obsession, and isolation can transform ordinary people into something far more frightening. That approach gives the film a refreshing identity within the cryptid horror genre.
Overall, Sawtooth Mountain is an engaging independent horror film that balances suspense, mystery, and creature feature thrills with strong atmosphere and compelling performances. It creates its own identity within the genre while delivering an entertaining, tension filled experience that should appeal to fans of wilderness thrillers and cryptid folklore alike.
“Sawtooth Mountain” premieres on Tubi as well as VOD and TVOD on August 11, 2026.
