Once in while “Supernatural” surprises us and doesn’t completely destroy us emotionally in an episode. This week’s episode was actually quite sweet, in a weird way of course.
When the episode opened, we saw a witch break into a house but also subsequently die immediately. We learn it was Rowena’s house and we see two other witches hidden outside seeing this unfold very unhappily. Nothing else really shocked us until we saw Sam on a run. He noticed a ghostly presence and boy were we shocked to see what he saw.
About that same time, Cas was living a new life in a town and he was using the name Clarence as his alias (we miss Megstiel). We learn that he has been fishing, but doesn’t think it is as relaxing as Dean says it is. He is in a bait shop talking to the shop owner about a body that was pulled from a nearby lake. He learned that the boy that was pulled from the lake was sucked dry. Immediately Cas knows it is a monster.
Back to Sam on his run, who he sees shocks him…it is Eileen. They go back to the bunker and Dean sees Eileen as well. They fill her in on what’s been going on and she asks them to help her get to heaven. However, since she was in hell this whole time it would be impossible to get her to heaven. Then, Sam remembers that there was a way to trap a soul in their own personal dimension in a way, but they needed a special ingredient that Rowena had. Sam decided to head to her place to see what he could find, and viewers are shocked to see Dean tells him to go on his own. Dean still feels very much defeated.
Cas goes to the local sheriff to ask questions about the death and he meets a mother looking for her missing son, the sheriff tells him that she is overreacting. Castiel believes her. The sheriff asks to speak to his superior so Cas reluctantly calls Dean’s FBI phone. There is an awkward conversation where we learn Cas hasn’t check any of the messages that Sam has sent him.
Sam and Eileen get to Rowena’s house and they find her secret stash is hidden behind a bookcase. Sam finds that she kept journals and conveniently a paper falls as Sam picks up a book and he realizes she was working on a way to corporealize his mother. Sam and Eileen try to share a sweet moment but it fails when she cannot hold his hand. He realizes then that this could help Eileen and bring her back. The two of them run out of there with all of the ingredients and once at the Impala Sam starts to collapse, he realizes that there is a hex bag near and finds it but the two witches show up. Sam signs to Eileen to get his brother, as the witches capture him.
The mother Cas met at the sheriff’s office followed him up to the river and convinces Cas to take her with him to try and search for her son. He tells her that monsters exist and that she should prepare herself for the worst, and then they find her son alive. He describes that he has seen a monster and then boom, the sheriff shows up! Monsters are always the sheriff! Cas kills him with an Angel blade but kind of goes all mark of Cain in front of the boy and his mother. Cas heals the boy, but you can see his mojo start to give out.
At this point, Sam is being held by the witches. They explain that Rowena’s place is cursed and anyone who walks in, dies instantly; well clearly except for Sam. They need him to bring back the dead girl who is the sister and daughter to these two witches. The creepy dark-haired witch takes Sam so he can collect the ingredients for the corporeal spell because they want to use it. However, if they use it then he wouldn’t be able to. The young witch recounts the terrible things her sister did to her and Sam tries to negotiate with but it doesn’t work.
Dean finally shows up, of course, this fight is a rough one. The young witch gets shot, but the ghost of the dead witch comes on the scene and Eileen has to fight her. Sam saves the day by killing the mother witch with a hex bag that he made sneakily while collecting the supplies.
Team Free Will prevails in the end and now its time back at the bunker to see if the spell will work for Eileen. Sam says the spell with his back to her, he doesn’t look once, clearly scared to see if it doesn’t work. Eileen comes to life before our eyes, stands naked and reborn. She approaches, calls out his name and Sam sees her. They touch hands and embrace warmly. Cut to Dean alone in the map room, Sam comes to chat and tells him he can’t give up. It’s the same fight they have been having the whole beginning of this season.
This episode ended quite well for “Supernatural”, we didn’t lose anyone and we got a win. But what does that mean now? As Dean said, he doesn’t know what is God and what isn’t. No one knows anything yet, but let’s hope we don’t lose Eileen again.
