Evan Whitten is busy! This talented young actor is known for his roles in “Mr. Robot,” “Destroyer,” “The Resident,” and more. Now he stars opposite Kate Hudson and Jun Jong Seo in “Mona Lisa and The Blood Moon.” Of course, “Mr. Robot” fans remember him from his role as Young Elliot. Among many projects he has coming soon, one called “Chupa” will be on Netflix and will revolve around a Chupacabra!

This is a mind-bending thriller from visionary director Ana Lily Amirpour. It is about a struggling single-mother (Hudson) who befriends a mysterious mental institute escapee with supernatural powers (Jong Seo). She sees an opportunity to make some fast cash, but draws the attention of a detective (Craig Robinson).

Try not to hold your breath during the trailer! The movie is in theaters and on digital and on demand.

Get to know Evan Whitten in our below interview.

Colleen Bement: Congratulations on your role in the exciting new film “Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon.” That film is definitely up my alley! What was the atmosphere like on the set?

Evan Whitten: I really liked the atmosphere on the set. It was cool being in New Orleans, and I loved being able to work with such talented actors. Also, Lily, the director, was great. She did a really good job at giving us a visual of the movie. Between her direction and the movie soundtrack playing on set, I felt really immersed in the scenes, and it helped give me an idea of what the movie was going to look and feel like.

CB: Were they any challenges that you faced while filming?

EW: Charlie has a very different life from my own.  He doesn’t have supportive family or friends.  He’s kind of alone and has to care for himself.  He gets bullied and has a complicated relationship with his mom.  So it was a bit of a challenge to play that character, but in a good way.  I enjoyed the challenge of putting myself in Charlie’s shoes.

CB: I am a big fan of the series you were in, “Mr. Robot.” That show was one of the most brilliant pieces of television I’ve ever seen. Would you happen to have any stories from the set?

EW: One thing that was kind of cool was that normally when you play a younger version of a character, the adult actor is not even on the set at the same time.  But on “Mr. Robot” most of my scenes were actually with Rami Malik.  Rami would always take time to work on our scenes together prior to filming.  He would give me tips and talk to me about my process.  Rami is a really great guy, an amazing actor, and I learned a lot from him.  Christian was a lot of fun to work with, Sam was amazing, and really everyone I worked with was great, and it was a great experience.  Plus, I was able to experience New York.

CB: Do you have any other projects in the works that you’re allowed to tell us about?

EW: I can’t really talk about some of my projects, but I do have a movie coming out next year on Netflix called “Chupa.”  You should definitely check it out! I play a boy named Alex, who goes to Mexico to meet his relatives, but then finds a Chupacabra there!  But instead of being a scary monster, Chupa is a loveable creature who Alex befriends.

CB: Have your parents been supportive of your acting career?

EW: My entire family has been so, so supportive of me, and not just my acting, but every dream I pursue!  Even when I relocate somewhere for a film for months, they will all come with me.  They always have my back, and I love them.

CB: Do you get much downtime and what are some of your hobbies?

EW: I get quite a bit of downtime, enough to have a lot of hobbies.  I love to write, make short movies and compose music.  I like to do a lot of stuff with my brothers too, like making comics together. I always love finding new creative things to do, just for fun when I am not acting.

Keep up with Evan’s projects here.
