To celebrate what could possibly be Castiel’s final “Supernatural” episode ever (15.18) and the love he showed for Dean in his sacrifice, here are some of the most notable moments between the pair.
4.01 “Lazarus Rising”
An obvious choice as this is Castiel’s first appearance in the show. Dean had been dead for four months (equal to 40 years in hell) and it seemed as if there was no possible way to bring him back. Until an Angel by the name of Castiel ‘gripped him tight and raised him from perdition’. Claiming it to be God’s will.
4.16 “On the Head of a Pin”
Castiel and Uriel as Dean to torture Alistair for information. When Dean notices that Cas is ‘on a leash’ Cas explains “I was getting too close to the humans in charge. You. They feel I’ve begun to express emotions…” When Uriel secretly frees Alistair they band together to fight him and Castiel visits Dean in the hospital after.
4.22 “Lucifer Rising”
Tensions are high between Dean and Cas as the angel struggles to rebel against heaven. Eventually, he helps Dean escape heaven’s clutches which even Chuck says is not a part of the story. Castiel ends up sacrificing his life so that Dean can stop Sam from killing Lilith and breaking the final seal.
5.03 “Free to Be You and Me”
Castiel appears to Dean in his motel room and the iconic ‘personal space’ issue arises. He needs Dean’s help to find Raphael which will lead him to god. The two first go undercover as FBI where Castiel reluctantly shows his badge and it’s upside down. Afterward, Dean discovers that when they confront Raphael Cas will likely die and he’s a virgin. Dean takes the overly-nervous angel to a brothel where Cas doesn’t succeed at ‘getting laid’. As they run from security Dean admits that he hasn’t laughed like that in a long while. After talking to Raphael, Dean confides in Cas about being happy by himself so Cas leaves.
5.04 “The End”
In this episode Castiel patiently waits by the side of the road for Dean to get some sleep, meanwhile, Dean is taken to 2014 where the world has been overrun by Lucifer and the Croatoan virus. 2014 Castiel has lost his angelic powers and is now a ‘hippie’ who laughs at most of the current Dean’s jokes. When 2014 Dean sends 2014 Cas into a trap Dean tries to stop it but gets knocked out. Castiel is still waiting for Dean when he gets back and he saves him from Zachariah prompting dean to say, “Don’t ever change.”
5.14 “My Bloody Valentine”
Sam and Dean ask Cas for help with a case relating to soulmates. Cas arrives at the morgue only to come face-to-face with Dean who he’s on the phone with. After a while, the trio discovers the horseman, Famine, is the cause of everything. Cas and Dean leave Sam behind and face Famine, though he catches up to them and uses his powers to defeat him. In the end, Cas tries to comfort Dean as he overhears his brother’s cries while he detoxes from the demon blood.
5.17 “99 Problems”
The famous “I found a liquor store. And I drank it.”, “On a bender.”, “It’s funnier in Enochian.” and “Sam, of course, is an abomination.” lines come into play as a deflated Cas helps Sam and Dean defeat the whore of Babylon. Towards the end, Dean and Cas have a heart-to-heart about fathers abandoning them.
5.18 “Point of No Return”
Dean tries to go to the angels so that he can say yes to Michael. Cas confronts him and quite literally beats some sense into him. “I rebelled for this! So that you could surrender to them? I gave everything for you. And this is what you give to me?” Cas yelled as he continuously beat Dean. Eventually, he brought Dean back to Bobby’s and then helped them rescue Adam.
6.03 “The Third Man”
Castiel has been away dealing with a civil war in heaven when Dean calls him. Apparently, Sam has been trying to call him for months but he hasn’t responded yet the second Dean called him he appeared. Castiel says this is because they share a ‘more profound bond’.
6.17 “My Heart Will Go On”
When people begin dying, Sam and Dean go to Balthazar for help and he responds with “Sorry, you have me confused with the other angel. You know, the one in the dirty trenchcoat who’s in love with you?” He finally admits to changing history so the Titanic never sank and because of this, fate is killing the ancestors of those who survived. In the end, Cas appears to save the boys from a very angry, Fate.
6.19 “Mommy Dearest”
The hunt for Eve is on, so Bobby and Sam turn to Dean hoping he’ll call Castiel. He responds with “Why does it always have to be me that makes the call, huh? It’s not like Cas lives in my ass. Dude’s busy.” After hearing his name, however, Cas appears directly behind Dean prompting the line “Cas, get out of my ass.” The four end up in a diner, when Cas attempts to search the town he ends up stuck in his chair, he reveals that he must be powerless because of Eve and Dean responds with, “Oh, well that’s great because without your power you’re basically a baby in a trenchcoat.” which prompts another infamous line, “I think you hurt his feelings.” The duo also gets into an argument over saving two kids vs trying to destroy Eve which Cas later wins when one of the kids turns out to be one of her monsters.
6.20 “The Man Who Would Be King”
The entire episode is narrated by Castiel as his perspective is finally given. Cas appears to Dean who is alone in the Impala and explains that he’s looking for Crowley. Dean tells him to call if he needs help and he disappears. Soon after, Sam, Dean, and Bobby are getting closer to Crowley’s location, but Sam and Bobby are struggling to trust Cas. At one point Dean defends, “This is Cas, guys. I mean, when there was no one and we were stuck, and I mean really stuck, he broke ranks. He has gone to the mat cut and bleeding for us so many freakin times. This is Cas. Don’t we owe him the benefit of the doubt, at least?” But when they call him, he doesn’t come. It was not until they’re ambushed by demons, he jumps in to save the day, they ‘forgive him’. The next time they call him they trap him in a ring of holy fire and Dean feels completely betrayed by the angel. In the end, Castiel goes to Dean and says that he’s doing what he’s doing because of and for Dean.
A new episode (15.19) airs tonight on the CW at 8/7c.
