Eight years after their formation and countless performances on stages across the country, When The Sun Sets have reached a major milestone with the release of their debut full-length album, The Cards We’re Dealt. More than just a collection of songs, the record represents years of growth, perseverance, and artistic evolution. It stands as a defining moment for the band, capturing the journey that brought them here while showcasing just how far they’ve come as musicians and storytellers.

It only takes one listen to know that this project is so much more than just a list of tracks thrown together for the sake of making an album. The record plays like an emotional snapshot of growth, anxiety, resilience, and hope. From the very beginning, the intentions are clear that this is a deeply personal endeavor rooted in mental health, self-reflection, and the unpredictability of life. But what keeps it from becoming overwhelmingly heavy is the balance the band strikes between vulnerability and catharsis. Even in its darkest moments, The Cards We’re Dealt never loses sight of hope.

Tracks like “Came Up Short” showcase When The Sun Sets at their best, blending emotionally honest lyricism with the infectious energy that has become a hallmark of their sound. The song captures much of what makes The Cards We’re Dealt so compelling: raw vulnerability wrapped in a chorus that feels destined to be shouted back from a packed crowd. Meanwhile, “Undertow” emerges as one of the album’s most powerful and relatable tracks, exploring the weight of mental health struggles while refusing to surrender to despair. It serves as a reminder that progress isn’t always measured by giant leaps forward. Instead, it’s often in the small victories that keep us moving. That message echoes something vocalist Zack Baumgartner shared during a Nerd Alert News interview in May 2025: “There’s still wins in every single day.”

Longtime fans will find plenty to love in tracks like “Talking to Your Ghost” and “If Love Was a Highway, Then You Missed Every Exit,” both of which capture the emotional core that has defined When The Sun Sets from the beginning. The raw honesty, vulnerability, and heartfelt storytelling on display are the very qualities that first drew listeners to the band and helped them stand out in a crowded scene. That same spirit runs throughout The Cards We’re Dealt, but with a noticeable sense of growth. Rather than straying from the sound that built their fanbase, the band builds upon it, pairing their trademark emotional depth with stronger songwriting, greater maturity, and a more confident sense of identity.

Musically, the album captures the modern pop punk sound while still feeling authentic to the genre’s roots. There are explosive choruses built for packed venues and singalongs, but also quieter, reflective moments that allow the lyrics to hit harder. When The Sun Sets clearly understand the emotional power of pacing, and the album benefits from that dynamic flow. Every track feels intentional rather than filler, giving the record a cohesive identity from start to finish.

Lyrically, this may be the strongest the band has ever sounded. The writing feels honest without becoming overly dramatic, tackling themes of depression, uncertainty, burnout, and perseverance in a way that feels relatable instead of manufactured. There’s a sincerity throughout the album that makes it easy to connect to, especially for listeners who have followed the band’s mental health advocacy over the years.

Production wise, Roye Robley deserves major credit for helping shape the sound of the album. The record feels polished without losing the raw energy that makes pop punk work in the first place. The guitars hit hard, the vocals remain emotionally charged, and the overall mix allows the lyrical and thematic depth of the songs to shine rather than getting lost in overproduction.

The collaborations across the album also help expand its sound without taking focus away from the band itself. Features from artists like 408, Bluprint, Definitely Maybe, latenightsinmycar, and lolitslea feel purposeful and add variety while still fitting naturally into the emotional core of the record.

One of the album’s biggest strengths is that it genuinely feels earned. You can hear the years of experience behind it—the long nights, the touring, the setbacks, and the determination to keep pushing forward. There’s a sense that When The Sun Sets knew this debut needed to fully represent who they are, and they approached it with that level of care.

For those who have followed When The Sun Sets throughout the years, The Cards We’re Dealt feels like a celebration of the band’s journey. One that honors their past while confidently embracing their future. For newcomers, it serves as an excellent introduction to what makes When The Sun Sets stand out in today’s crowded pop punk landscape: authenticity, emotional transparency, and a genuine desire to make listeners feel seen.

With The Cards We’re Dealt, When The Sun Sets have done so much more than just releasing a strong debut. They’ve delivered a statement about who they are as artists and what they want their music to mean to people. And if this album is any indication, their best years are just beyond the horizon.
