War comes to every world according to the Netflix intro to their exciting new film “Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire.” It is a bit creepy to say considering what is actually going on right now on Earth, but sci-fi is usually a welcome escape from reality. This is just part of why I am excited for this fresh new film.

First of all, it’s science fiction and that is always a plus. Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind “300,” “Man of Steel,” and “Army of the Dead” is at the helm and that gives me confidence. I’m also excited to see a female hero in charge and Sofia Boutella looks like she’ll be amazing. According to Netflix, she will have to defend the life she has become accustomed to by assembling a team of outsiders, insurgents, peasants, and orphans of war from different worlds. This group will have to stand against Mother World, the capital of a spacefaring, expansionist empire.

I’m also excited that this will have a “Star Wars” feel to it. It was reportedly a passion project for Snyder as he dreamt up the idea as a “Star Wars” pitch. He wrote a script meant to be a “Star Wars” spin-off movie that would take place away from the usual Skywalker storyline. Once Lucasfilm was sold to Disney, the project was shelved. Thankfully, Snyder reworked the script to be an original sci-fi story unrelated to “Star Wars” entirely. After the success of “Army of the Dead,” Netflix gave Snyder the green light to make the movie.

Zack Snyder movies tend to be pretty epic, and from the trailer, this one will not disappoint. One caveat I must add is that I’m not much of a fan of “Batman v Superman” for the same reason I wasn’t a fan of “Captain America: Civil War:” I wish superheroes would just get along to save the Earth. Wishful thinking much?

Then there is the incredible cast to get excited about. It includes Charlie Hunnam, Cary Elwes, Jena Malone, Djimon Housou, and Ray Fisher. A bonus excitement comes with the fact that incredible “Sense8” stars Bae Doona and Alfonso Herrera are also in the movie. Any connection to “Sense8” will always grab my attention.

Rebel Moon” is actually a two-part film. Part one, subtitled A Child of Fire will be released December 22nd, 2023, while Part two, The Scargiver, is currently set for release on April 19, 2024.  Check out Netflix’s official description and a cool behind-the-scenes trailer below.

From Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind “300,” “Man of Steel,” and “Army of the Dead,” comes “Rebel Moon.” an epic science-fantasy event decades in the making. When a peaceful settlement on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Motherworld, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a new army of heroes is formed.
