As one of the top stunt performers in the business, Jodi Stecyk has some great stories!

This World Stunt Award nominee is well-known for his work on “Inception,” “The Revenant,” “Deadpool 2,” “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” and “Godzilla.” TV shows include “Supernatural,” “Batwoman,” “Supergirl,” “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” “Riverdale,” and so many more. Lately, he can be found on the set of “Snowpiercer” as Stunt Coordinator where he is enjoying the creativity.

Colleen Bement: First off, I just have to tell you that my jaw dropped when I read your IMDB page. You’ve been involved in some absolutely amazing projects. My first question is, is there a particular project that was very close to your heart?

Jodi Stecyk: Hi thanks for those kind words. I guess if you are asking about sentimental value I would say that the very first feature film I worked on called “Mystery Alaska” would be the closest to my heart. It was my first feature and I was hired by Guy Bews who I had briefly met a few months before but he would turn out to be a huge influence in my career and one of my closest friends in the business.

CB: I see that you’re currently working on “The Last of Us.” My readers would love to hear about that experience. Is there anything that you can tell us? What has life been like on the set?

JS: I was lucky enough to do some performing days on The Last of Us and some second unit coordinating. It’s pretty neat to see the scale of the show and how it’s a lot like the video game. I can’t say too much but I think that people who love the game will love the tv show adaptation as well.

CB: Do you have other projects in the works that you’re allowed to tell us about?

JS: I am currently working on “Snowpiercer” season 4 in Vancouver. I am a fan of the show so it was a real treat to be working on it as well and contributing creatively. Lots of good stuff to look forward to this season for fans, things that will surprise you and keep you wanting to watch!

CB: What do you like the most about being a Stunt Performer, and what do you like the least?

JS: Things I like the most outweigh the things I like the least. I enjoy the challenge of having a new set of circumstances to navigate every time I go to work, I’m always presented with a challenge and I need to figure it out. I enjoy all the really cool people I get to meet and work with to solve these challenges. Traveling has always been a pleasure of mine and I have been lucky enough to travel around a lot of my home country Canada along with Russia, Belarus, and Mexico. My least favorite part is the time I spend away from my family because of the long hours of work and travel.

CB: Have you ever had an actor that was an absolute natural and picked up the choreography of the stunts?

JS: Yes!! KJ Apa also known as Archie on “Riverdale,” is the most talented physical Actor I have worked with so far. He picked up the fight Choreography very fast and he did 90% of his own fights. He always enjoyed fighting the Stunt Guys more than he would other Actors. The Stunt Guys are better dance partners and could help him out and cover his mistakes if he made any. And he’s just a great guy!

CB: On a personal note, “Inception” is one of my all-time favorite films. Do you have a story from the set that you can share?

JS: “Inception” was a great show to work on, I am a big fan of Christopher Nolan. I was a part of all the winter stuff and we shot it at Fortress Mountain in Kananaskis, Alberta. One day on set it was blistering wind and snowing and out walks Chris from his director’s tent in a light spring jacket and dress shoes to give direction to the stunt team. My gag was doubling Cilion Murphy on the side of the cliff before the avalanche hit. I was choppered up to the top of Yamniska Mountain early in the morning where they had rigged a descender line for us to be attached to. My buddy and I were in climbing harnesses clipped into static climbing rope around 80 feet below the cliff edge, 900 feet above the ground. I was directly below my friend Brent Connolly who also had a quick release in his line. On action, he pulled the quick release and we both free fell 50 feet before a second static line caught us. The worst part was on rehearsal I had to hold a radio to hear the counts and que so I ended up falling down the side of the mountain upside down with my heels clicking off the rocks as I fell coming to a hard stop upside down 900 feet above the ground was a feeling I will never forget!
