The very first GalactiCon is in the books and it was an amazing time. The weekend vibe was all about joy and catching up with friends. Some haven’t seen each other in months, or even years. There were smiles, laughter, and hugs at every corner. Outside the snow was falling while inside it was toasty and warm. Especially for those who stayed at the hotel for the weekend and left the real world behind. The Marriott DTC is always a favorite of con-goers. There is plenty of space and areas in which to chill out from the crowds. It is lovely and updated, although the old-timers certainly miss the atrium balconies. The atrium space, however, was the ideal setup of space and a fun bar in which to hang out right in the middle of it all.Â
The celebrities were fascinating and told the most amazing stories. Celebs like “Star Trek’s Todd Stashwick, Denise Crosby, Jesse James Keitel, and J.G. Hertzler. “Quantum Leap’s Mason Alexander Park was there, and “The Mandalorian’s Omid Abtahi. “Supernatural’s Rick Worthy charmed audiences, and Ross Mullan shared experiences on the set of “Game of Thrones.” Ross Marquand of “The Walking Dead” fame was on hand to meet his fans, and “Comic Book Men’s Ming Chen was a blast to chat with.
Along with the celebs the rooms were filled with panels run by enthusiastic and knowledgeable fans with topics like The Best of Doctor Who, Drag Queen Bingo, video and board gaming, and fun kids activities. They even had a room set up for podcasters to host live shows.
Attendees of all ages showed off their amazing cosplays. Throughout the hallways, there were so many well-crafted and unique costumes that people put their hearts and souls into making. Love and appreciation for people’s creativity and hard work were shown with non-stop photos being taken. Droids, robots, stormtroopers, Doctors, Mandalorians, and more. The holiday season even felt kicked off by a Grinch Stormtrooper. One stand out was a C-3PO that was so well done that even George Lucus himself would probably have hired him. A giant velociraptor freaked out passers-by except for a brave little girl who had no fear.
The main events room was always hopping with either a celebrity or costume contest or the Saturday Night Gala. The music was a bit interesting, yet attendees still had fun. Just before the dance was the con-favorite cosplay contest and the craftsmanship and passion that went into making the costumes was off the hook amazing. There was a nice added touch of having celebrities come on stage to present special awards.
From early in the morning until late at night, there was always something to do. The dealer’s room was packed with goodies where people found unique holiday gifts and special items for themselves. It is doubtful that anyone went home empty-handed. Someone even offered chair massages which was needed by the time Sunday afternoon rolled around. A long Thanksgiving weekend offered the opportunity for people to reconnect and celebrate fandom. Nerd Alert News looks forward to a follow-up GalactiCon!Â
