Happy holidays from Nerd Alert News! ‘Tis the season…for Holiday Horror!

If you are getting a tad tired of all this Christmas spirit and holiday cheer, a good yuletide horror flick is just what you need! It’s fun to watch some of these holiday movies that are obnoxiously horror-ific, in this horror expert’s professional opinion, Here I’m going to count down my top five favorite yuletide horror movies. Maybe you’ll decide to give one a try, especially if you’re drowning in eggnog and too much “quality” family time.

5.) “SILENT NIGHT” (2012)

This 2012 yuletide tale is about a lunatic Santa who goes on a rampage, shooting guns and slashing axes at people. Starring Jaime King and Malcolm McDowell, among others, this movie is directed by Steven C. Miller, this is a fun slasher flick that has tons of holiday flair. Jaime King is especially entertaining, it’s fun seeing her as a scream queen.

4.) “BLACK CHRISTMAS” (1974)

This movie is sometimes called the grandfather of holiday horror, as it was one of the first of its genre, and is also one of the very first slasher movies. Starring a very familiar Margot Kidder (Lois Lane from Superman!) this movie, which is set during the holidays, is about a group of sorority sisters who receive nasty prank calls from someone obscene. The police are, as it is only 1974, unable to trace the calls because the girls can’t keep the caller on the line long enough. What happens to these girls will leave their loved ones dreading the idea of the holidays for years to come. One reason this movie is on my list is that it (as well as its 2006 remake of the same name) is based on a true story. Scary stuff!

3.) “KRAMPUS” (2015)

This is a fun one! I love it! With an all-star cast including Toni Collette, Adam Scott, and David Koechner, this is the story of the anti-Santa Claus, Krampus. When the family arrives for Christmas at the Engle’s house, everyone is looking for a reason to bicker, bully and fight. No one is having a good time. Things only get worse for these folks, as their Christmas spirit is mostly gone, so Krampus descends on them. One by one, horrifying things happens to each family member. This is classic horror, sprinkled with dark comedy, with a Christmas twist. The ending is perfectly ominous, making this #3 on my list.

2.) “A CHRISTMAS HORROR STORY” (2015)

This is definitely one of my favorites! This story, with an all-star cast led by William Shatner, is set in the town of Bailey Downs on Christmas Eve. As DJ Dangerous Dan spins his yuletide tunes, chaos erupts yet again on the cursed town. Bailey Downs is dealing with many tragedies, as well as recovering from recent tragedies, and this tale weaves several plots together to come to a wild finale. Krampus versus Santa Claus is the main theme here. It’s a recommended watch- the special effects, the plot; all of it comes together to bring us a creepy good yuletide horror-fest. Absolutely a must-see!

1.) “A CHRISTMAS CAROL” (1984)

Surprised? Yes, this is my favorite Christmas horror movie! This classic tale, written by Charles Dickens in 1843, is, by all means, a horror film! A miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, is visited by three ghosts (four, if you include his partner, Marley, who arrives to warn him of the ghosts/spirits coming to see him) on Christmas eve, to warn him that his nasty ways will soon have in the grave. “Scrooge” as he is more commonly known as, is visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future. It’s a classic, and despite the holiday cheer of it and the promising ending, it’s still scary! Thus, it claims the number one spot on my list of Top Five Holiday Horror movies to watch.
