Today, the BBC announced Ncuti Gatwa will play the new “Doctor Who.” Gatwa is well known to British audiences for the Netflix show, “Sex Education.” Born in Rwanda, the Scottish actor recently voiced the video game GRID Legends and is filming the new Margot Robbie movie “Barbie.”

Gatwa will be the 14th actor to play the Doctor, replacing Jodi Whittaker. Whittaker has one more episode for audiences, expected to air this fall.

Russell T. Davies is returning to the show as showrunner, replacing Chris Chibnall.

On the official “Doctor Who” website, Ncuti said: There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care.

I will endeavour my utmost to do the same. Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger.”

While Russell T Davies said: The future is here and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars. Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those Tardis keys in seconds. It’s an honour to work with him, and a hoot, I can’t wait to get started.

The Doctor’s current companions – John Bishop and Mandip Gill, will also leave the show to make room for an all-new start in 2023. Of her character’s exit, Gill said: I think just like me, just like my character, there’ll be a lot of tears, but I loved where it ended up.

Production of the show will also change. It will be made by Bad Wolf Productions, set up by Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter and owned by Sony. The company’s previous work includes “A Discovery of Witches,” “His Dark Materials” and “I Hate Suzie.”
