Meet Geoff Meed.
This Writer and Director began his career as a stuntman on the Universal Studios Hollywood Tour, and now he has at least five original screenplays, directed four of them, and starred in all five. Sci-Fi fans have seen Meed in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Babylon 5,” “Charmed,” “Star Trek: Enterprise,” “Resident Evil: Extinction,” “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” and the long list continues. He performed all of his own stunts and worked with the likes of Steven Seagal and Chuck Norris. Lovers of apocalypse movies have “4 Horsemen: Apocalypse” to look forward to where he wrote and directed it.
Always busy, Meed is actually in Israel training with ex special forces, SWAT, and counterterrorism talents! Nerd Alert News caught up with him while he was waiting for his flight. Check out the trailer here.
Colleen Bement: Apocalyptic movies are right up my alley so let’s chat about “4 Horsemen: Apocalypse.” My first question is, the movie appears to be your “baby” as you wrote and directed it. Where did the idea for the story come from?
Geoff Meed: Honestly, the Asylum came to me with about two or three weeks before production and said that the original writers had a family emergency or something like that, I can’t remember. But they asked if I could take it over. I essentially did a rewrite and eliminated a lot of the scientific stuff and added in more of the military stuff because that’s kind of my specialty. I told them that I also wanted to direct it as well, and they said OK.
CB: Where did you film it and were there any challenges that you had to overcome? Was it all filmed on location?
GM: My taking over to do the rewrite added in a couple of locations. It really put our line producer Eva Ceja to the test, and she came through with flying colors. I don’t know how she found these locations but they were amazing. I believe the fort we shot at was used in “Homeland.” She asked me if I really wanted her to find me real helicopters and I said yes absolutely. That location was about an hour and a half drive outside of Los Angeles. But everything was shot in the LA area. We shot at Malibu Canyon where they shot the original “Planet of the Apes,” we shot up in Santa Clarita, shot out in San Bernardino, and at the Asylum. Another big hurdle was finding a real radio tower, and somehow Eva found that for us as well.
CB: Do you have any projects in the works that you’re allowed to share with your fans, or are they “hush-hush?”
GM: I just finished a spec script I was hired to write on the samurai for another production company. Next up for Asylum, I will write and direct “DC Down” which will be a fun action/disaster movie.
CB: Your filmography is off the hook and our readers have seen you in so many roles such as in Buffy,” “Babylon 5,” “Star Trek: Enterprise,” “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” the list of sci-fi appearances goes on and on. So, what is it like for you to be behind the camera?
GM: Hands down the one thing about directing I love is there is little downtime. For instance, when I did “Fast 5,” out of three months being on location I actually only filmed for 19 of those days. One of the biggest things I cannot stand about acting +is sitting around waiting. Another thing I really enjoy about directing is choreographing fights, action sequences like gunplay, and being able to get good performances out of actors working with them to find different ways to do multiple takes.
CB: When you actually find time to relax and unwind, what do you like to do?
GM: Blah, I have way too much free time. But I spend a lot of it with my dogs taking them to the beach, and working out.
CB: Do you enjoy passing along your knowledge of fitness and martial arts to the next generation of actors interested in learning the skills?
GM: I kind of keep the two separate. I have owned two martial arts/fitness studios, and I’m planning on opening up another martial arts studio either by the end of this year or the beginning of 2023. As we are doing this interview, I’m sitting at LAX airport on my way to go train with ex special forces, SWAT, and counterterrorism talents in Israel.
