Pokémon UNITE will be available for download to all Nintendo Switch owners on July 21st. What’s behind Tencent Games’ new free-to-play title?

The Pokémon Company and TiMi Studio Group have developed a new Pokémon game for the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices. There has never been a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game for the popular pocket monsters.

For the first time, players have the opportunity to control their favorite Pokémon themselves in a strategic team battle game and get some real action with it. The launch has already taken place on the Switch, and the version for iOS and Android will follow in September.

Like the established representatives of the genre, it is free to all players. In addition, progress in the game will be available across platforms. Achievements on the Nintendo console are also shared on the smartphone.

This is how the Pokémon MOBA works

In Pokémon UNITE, the roster includes 21 Pokémon from all generations. However, most playable Pokémon are first-generation. As usual for the genre, the different Pokémon are divided into different classes. Players can then choose from “Attacker”, “Speedster”, “Defender”, “All-Rounder”, and “Supporter”.

In Pokémon Unite, five players per team fight against each other on two lanes. In the ten-minute long matches, so-called “Eros energy” must be collected on the “Eros Island”.

Energy levels your own character. This not only improves skills, the Pokémon develop in the usual manner and change their appearance.

Classically, therefore, Charmander develops into Charmeleon and then into Charizard. Each character has two basic attacks and one ultimate ability. Depending on the desired style of play, players have to choose between two variants of the basic attacks.

Even before the start of the round, the players equip their characters with up to three items that serve to increase values such as speed or life regeneration.

The “Eros energy” is won by defeating neutral Pokémon or opposing characters. However, the energy gained is not only used to become stronger. It’s essential to win the matches.

Whoever scores more points wins the match

The aim of the game is to get more points than the opposing team. Mainly these points are obtained in the “Goal Zones”. Here players can hand in their collected “Eros energy”.

A special feature is the middle of the map, because this is where the “Legendary Pit” can be found. Legendary Pokémon appear there and will demand everything from the players before they can be defeated. The boss fights are worthwhile though. If your own team defeats a legendary opponent, there are, for example, additional points and various aids such as shields for the characters or barriers around your own “goal zone”.

In a MOBA, teamwork is the key to success. This also applies to Pokémon UNITE.

Rewards can also be used to unlock new, playable Pokémon, among other things. Of course, this works as usual with free titles, also with real money. There is also a ranked mode.

What are you say about the game? Will you give it a try?
