Lesley Mirza squeezed in some time to chat about the amazing experience she had playing Marjorie in Jordan Peele’s “The Twilight Zone.” The Toronto born actress was also just on Mon. Apr. 8th’s “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” and will be in two short films “Blood Covers All,” “Good,” and the anticipated new feature film “Brother, I Cry.” Mirza has been busy! Get to know how it all started for her and what she has coming up next.

Colleen Bement: Jordan Peele’s new “The Twilight Zone” is streaming all over TVs and devices this week. What can you share with my readers about your experiences on the set?

Lesley Mirza: Working with Kumail Nanjiani and Amara Karan—and on “The Twilight Zone!” It was an experience I’ll never forget. They are incredibly talented and it was a pleasure to watch them work. I’m also a huge “Black Mirror” fan, so to have Owen Harris directing ‘The Comedian’ episode was outstanding (he directed two “Black Mirror” episodes).
Fun fact: I actually auditioned for a different role in the same episode.

CB: You had a guest spot on “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.” What was that like?

LM: What an amazing cast and crew! I loved every minute on set and didn’t want my day to end. I also got to wear a marvelous vintage outfit! ‘The Getaway’ is a super-fun episode and I can’t wait for it to air on Monday, April 8th.

CB: What can you share about your latest projects?

LM: I had the pleasure of being cast in a feature film “Brother, I Cry” from up-and-coming writer/director Jessie Anthony—she’s one to watch! Starring Justin Rain (Fear The Walking Dead, The Killing), it is the dramatic story of Jon, a young man trapped in a world of addiction. I play a doctor. The film is slated to be released this year.

CB: You were born in Toronto and raised in the UK? Tell us the story behind that.

LM: My mother is British and my father is first generation Canadian (his family are all British, too). In the early 80s my father was offered a job in London, so off we flew across the pond. We lived in Purley, Surrey, a town in South London, and I went to an all-girls school in walking distance of our home. I loved my life in England, but in the 90s I got itchy feet and decided to move back to Canada and chose Vancouver as my destination.

CB: When did you catch the acting bug?

LM: I loved drama class at school and auditioned for every play and musical production the school organized, including “My Fair Lady” and “Nicholas Nickleby.” As a young adult, I was lucky enough to work on the British production Friend or Foe (movie) and “Lipstick on Your Collar” (mini-series starring Ewan McGregor), which fueled my passion for acting.
When I moved back to Canada, I put performing on hold and worked as a freelance lifestyle journalist, writing articles for Vancouver Magazine, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Tourism Vancouver, and many more.

Almost 4 years ago, I decided to make a change and wondered what it would be like to work as a film/TV “extra” now and then. I joined a background performers’ agency and had a wonderful time meeting new people and working on amazing productions. My love for acting was refueled. I registered for an acting class after acting class to develop my skills again, got an agent, and volunteered for student and independent films. I am thrilled to be back to acting and can’t wait for each new project!
